Streaming platform Disney+ announced the renewal of the FX show, which follows the fortunes of Wrexham under the ownership of Hollywood’s Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds, in a press release on Friday. The renewal will take Welcome to Wrexham to eight seasons and Disney+ said it was expected to run through to 2029. It marks the first time the series has been given a multi-season renewal. “A three-season order for a TV series is nearly unheard of and is only possible through the ground-breaking work of our Emmy-winning documentary team and the relentless rise of Wrexham AFC and all those working so hard to make sports history,” said Mac and Reynolds in the release. “We are so happy we get to keep telling the Wrexham story for years to come.” Mac and Reynolds are also executive producers on the series, which premiered in 2022 and was renewed for a fifth season in May 2025. The eight-episode fifth season will premiere on May 15, charting Wrexham’s first season in the Championship in over 40 years as it competes for promotion to the Premier League. The team’s run to the FA Cup fifth round, including ties against Premier League Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, will also feature, alongside Wrexham Women’s journey to their first Adran Premier title. The latest renewal could conceivably see the Welcome to Wrexham cameras follow the team in the Premier League. Phil Parkinson’s side are seventh in the Championship, one place and two points outside the play-offs. Although the club receives no money from the show, the renewal is a significant commercial boost. As The Athletic reported in 2025, it has long been considered by the hierarchy as Wrexham’s “biggest commercial asset” due to how the spotlight afforded by the show has helped secure a selection of big-money sponsors and transform the club into a global brand. Mac and Reynolds completed a takeover of Wrexham in 2021 and the club have risen from the fifth-tier National League to the Championship under their ownership following three successive promotions. A minority stake in the club was sold to Apollo Sports Capital in December. Spot the pattern.
