başta olmak üzere birçok uzay programı kapsamında, Ay'a insanlı görevler düzenlenmesi ve Ay yüzeyinde kalıcı üsler kurulmasına yönelik çalışmalar yoğunlaştı. Bu çerçevede, Ay yüzeyindeki yerel kaynakların yaşam alanları ve altyapı sistemlerinde nasıl kullanılabileceğine yönelik araştırmalar da giderek önem kazanıyor. ABD'nin Texas eyaletinin Houston kentindeki Rice Üniversitesinin Makine Mühendisliği Bölümü'nde öğretim üyesi olarak görev yapan Denizhan Yavaş'ın Iowa State Üniversitesinden Ashraf Bastawros ile yaptığı araştırma bu alanda dikkat çekici bulgular ortaya koydu. Akademik çalışmaları genel olarak ileri mühendislik malzemeleri, kompozit malzemeler, kırılma mekaniği ve uzay uygulamaları için geliştirilen hafif ve dayanıklı yapılar üzerine yoğunlaşan Yavaş'ın çalışması, Ay yüzeyindeki tozun yapı malzemelerinin geliştirilmesinde kullanılabileceğini gösterdi. NASA ile ilişkili projelerde de araştırmalar yürüten Yavaş, AA muhabirine yaptığı değerlendirmede, çalışmanın çıkış noktasını ve Ay tozunun mühendislik açısından taşıdığı potansiyeli anlattı. Ay tozunu yapı malzemesine dönüştürme fikrinin, Ay yüzeyindeki tozun oluşturduğu sorunlara çözüm arayışıyla ortaya çıktığını belirten Yavaş, şöyle devam etti: "Ay yüzeyindeki toz oldukça aşındırıcı, keskin ve ekipmanlar açısından problem oluşturabilecek bir malzeme olarak biliniyor. Denizhan Yavaş, gerçek Ay materyallerinin son derece sınırlı ve bunlara erişimin zor olduğunu dile getirerek, "Bu nedenle Ay toprağının kimyasal ve fiziksel özelliklerini temsil eden ve "lunar regolith simulant" adı verilen özel bir benzetim malzemesi kullandık. Çalışmada bu malzemeyi fiber takviyeli polimer kompozitlerin içine entegre ettik ve malzemenin mekanik performansını inceledik." dedi. Özellikle Ay yüzeyinde gelecekte kullanılabilecek hafif ama dayanıklı yapılar açısından bu yaklaşımın potansiyelini değerlendirmeye çalıştıklarını anlatan Yavaş, "Öne çıkan bulgulardan biri Ay tozu benzeri malzemenin kompozit sistemlerde dayanım, tokluk ve hasar toleransını artırabilmesi oldu. Bazı mekanik performans ölçümlerinde yaklaşık yüzde 30-40 seviyelerine ulaşan iyileşmeler gözlemledik." diye konuştu. Yavaş, Ay tozunun astronot kıyafetlerine yapışabildiğini, ekipmanları aşındırabildiğini ve mekanik sistemlere zarar verebildiğini belirterek, "Çalışmamız, bu sorunlu malzemenin aynı zamanda faydalı bir mühendislik kaynağına dönüşebileceğini gösteriyor." ifadesini kullandı. Rice Üniversitesi Makine Mühendisliği Bölümü Öğretim Üyesi Yavaş, gelecekte Ay'da kurulabilecek yaşam alanları, enerji sistemleri veya mobil keşif araçları için bu tür malzemelerin kritik olabileceğinin altını çizerek şunları söyledi: "Ayrıca Ay yüzeyindeki aşırı sıcaklık değişimleri, mikrometeorit etkileri ve radyasyon gibi zorlu koşullar düşünüldüğünde, yalnızca güçlü değil aynı zamanda hasar toleransı yüksek malzemelere ihtiyaç duyulacak. Araştırmamızın sonuçları, Ay'dan elde edilen yerel kaynakların dayanıklı sistemlerin geliştirilmesinde kullanılabileceğine işaret ediyor. Bu sonuçlar, Ay yüzeyinde zaten bulunan bir malzemenin gelecekte yapısal uygulamalarda değerlendirilebileceğini göstermesi açısından önemli." Yavaş, Ay'da kalıcı yaşam alanları ve altyapılarının kurulması için yalnızca astronot göndermenin yeterli olmayacağını, yapı malzemeleri, koruyucu sistemler, enerji altyapıları ve mobil araçların da Ay koşullarına uygun şekilde üretilebilmesinin gerekeceğini belirterek, "Uzay araştırmalarındaki en büyük problemlerden biri dünyadan malzeme taşımanın çok maliyetli ve lojistik açıdan zor olması. Bu nedenle gelecekte Ay'da sürdürülebilir yaşam hedefleniyorsa, yerel kaynakların kullanılabilmesi büyük önem taşıyor." dedi. Denizhan Yavaş, araştırmanın henüz erken aşamada olsa da "Ay'daki malzemeyle Ay'da inşa etme" fikrine küçük ama önemli bir katkı sunduğunu ifade ederek, "Önümüzdeki yıllarda Ay'da kalıcı üs kurma çalışmaları hızlandıkça Ay kaynaklarını doğrudan mühendislik malzemesine dönüştüren araştırmaların öneminin daha da artacağını düşünüyorum. Bizim çalışmamız da bu vizyonun erken aşamadaki yapı taşlarından biri olabilir." değerlendirmesinde bulundu. Bir sonraki aşamada kompozit sistemlerde kullanılan Ay tozu oranını artırmayı ve aynı zamanda üretilebilirlik ile mekanik performansı koruyabilmeyi hedeflediklerini kaydeden Yavaş, uzun vadede ise Ay yüzeyindeki yerel kaynakları çok daha yoğun şekilde kullanan hafif, dayanıklı ve ölçeklenebilir yapısal malzemeler geliştirmeyi amaçladıklarını söyledi. Yavaş, bu yaklaşımın uzay uygulamalarının yanı sıra dünyadaki sürdürülebilir mühendislik uygulamaları açısından da yeni fikirler ortaya çıkarabileceğini düşündüklerini dile getirdi. Çalışma konusunda akademi ve uzay araştırmaları çevrelerinden oldukça olumlu geri dönüşler aldıklarını belirten Yavaş, "Çalışmamız, malzeme bilimi alanındaki oldukça saygın yayınlarından biri olan Advanced Engineering Materials dergisinde yayımlandı. Ayrıca derginin kapak çalışması olarak seçilmesi bizim için gurur vericiydi." dedi.
