Morocco Condemns Armed Attack at Washington Gala, Expresses Solidarity
Rabat – Morocco has strongly condemned the armed attack that targeted a major event in Washington attended by US President Donald Trump, expressing solidarity with the American leader and the people of the United States.
A source from the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Morocco denounces the attack and stands in full support of President Trump, his family, and the US government and people.
The statement reaffirmed Morocco’s firm rejection of all forms of violence, extremism, and terrorism, regardless of their origins or motives.
The incident occurred on Saturday during a media gala at the Washington Hilton, where President Trump was the guest of honor. The event, known as the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, brought together senior officials, journalists, and prominent figures.
According to reports, chaos erupted when gunshots were heard near the venue. US Secret Service agents quickly moved to secure the president and escorted him off the stage as armed security confronted the attacker. Witnesses described scenes of panic as guests took cover under tables while security teams responded.
Authorities said the suspect, believed to be acting alone, breached a security checkpoint outside the ballroom while carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. Law enforcement officers exchanged gunfire with the individual and managed to detain him at the scene.
An officer was reportedly injured during the confrontation but was not in critical condition. Trump later described the incident as an attempted assassination.
“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely,” the president said on Truth Social.
Investigations are ongoing, with federal agents conducting searches linked to the suspect, who is believed to be from California. Officials have not confirmed all details about his identity.
World leaders reacted with shock to the incident and expressed relief that no major casualties were reported.
