Or did they glide down from trees before developing powered flight?A landmark study published in August 2026 may finally have an answer.According to researchers from the University of Southampton and the National Natural History Museum in Paris, the earliest known bird, Archaeopteryx, didn't launch into the air the way modern birds do.Instead, it relied on a surprisingly simple technique: a series of rapid, two-legged jumps.The researchers describe it as a "hop, hop, and away" strategy.Why the first bird couldn't fly like modern birdsArchaeopteryx lived around 150 million years ago and is often described as the missing evolutionary link between non-avian dinosaurs and modern birds.Although it had feathers and wings, it still retained many dinosaur-like features, including teeth, claws and a long, bony tail.Its body simply wasn't built for the kind of explosive take-offs seen in today's birds.Scientists found three major physical limitations:• It lacked a keeled sternum, the large breastbone that anchors the powerful flight muscles found in modern birds.• Its shoulder joints couldn't raise the wings completely above the body.• A single leap didn't generate enough lift to get it airborne.In other words, the classic image of a bird spreading its wings and immediately taking off wasn't physically possible for Archaeopteryx.Scientists built billions of virtual flight simulationsOne of the biggest challenges in studying Archaeopteryx is that fossils are often flattened over millions of years, making it difficult to reconstruct movement accurately.To overcome this limitation, researchers created highly detailed 3D computer models.The simulations included:• Maximum muscle strength• Joint movement limitations• Bone stress thresholds• Aerodynamic forcesScientists then tested billions of possible movement combinations for a 400-gram Archaeopteryx.The results were revealing.Every attempt to simulate a single-leap take-off failed.However, one strategy consistently worked.The bird first used its powerful hind legs to perform multiple rapid jumps before transitioning into sustained wing-assisted flight.Researchers found that up to 90% of the initial take-off force came from the legs rather than the wings.The answer may still be visible in birds todayThe study identified two possible launch sequences.The first involved three consecutive two-legged leaps followed by continuous wing flapping.The second involved two jumps with a downward wing flap inserted between them.Interestingly, scientists discovered that several modern birds still use a similar technique.Species such as crows, magpies and seagulls often perform multiple small hops when taking off during routine activities like feeding.Only when threatened do they switch to the powerful, energy-intensive launches commonly associated with birds.A discovery that could rewrite how students learn evolutionPerhaps the most significant finding is that the study may finally settle one of palaeontology's biggest debates.For decades, scientists argued between two competing theories.The "ground-up" hypothesis suggested that flight evolved from running dinosaurs.The "trees-down" hypothesis proposed that flight began with animals gliding from branches.The new research appears to support the ground-up model, but with an important modification.Early flight didn't begin with running or gliding.It began with a series of carefully coordinated jumps.Sometimes, the biggest evolutionary breakthroughs don't start with giant leaps.They begin with a few small hops.Disclaimer: This article was written by TOI Education using information from a scientific study published in August 2026 and publicly available research materials.
