High school student dies in horror accident after trying to swim across Arizona lake

Published: 19:09, 10 May 2026 | Updated: 19:09, 10 May 2026 A high school student who was just days away from graduating has drowned after trying to swim across a lake in Arizona.   Jaysyn Robles, an 18-year-old senior at Imagine Prep at Coolidge, died at Canyon Lake on Friday, according to AZ Family.  The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said that their Lake Patrol unit responded to a drowning just before 1pm. Officials said that Robles was attempting to swim across the body of water but began to struggle.  People at the lake tried to rescue the high school student but could not, and he sank beneath the water.  Lin Powell, a witness who called 911 for help, told AZ Family that he heard Robles screaming for his life.  'I told them [911] at 12.45pm when I called, get divers out here now,' said Powell.  He added that he watched Robles' friends and family desperately trying to rescue him. Peter Blind, a longtime friend of the victim, told the outlet that Robles had big dreams for after high school. 'He was really excited to graduate; he was ready to start working. He had a whole lot of different ideas of what to do. He thought about piloting, going to Africa even,' said Blind.  He added that how he spent half his life with Robles and will now have to walk to receive his diploma on his own.  'Our family is completely heartbroken right now,' Robles' family said in a statement. 'Jaysyn was only 18 years old and was supposed to graduate from Imagine Coolidge Prep on May 20th.'  Officials said that as Robles was drowning others attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful Robles was less than two weeks away from graduating. His family said he 'played football, wrestling, and soccer, and was loved by everyone around him' 'He played football, wrestling, and soccer, and was loved by everyone around him.  'He was athletic, outgoing, funny, and had the kind of smile and energy that could light up any room. More than anything, Jaysyn was just a genuinely good kid.  'He was always checking on people, making everyone laugh, and showing up for the people he cared about.' 'He had such a big heart and the kind of presence that made people gravitate toward him,' they added.  'He loved his family deeply, especially his little sister, and he had so much life ahead of him. This loss has been devastating for our family and everyone who knew him.  'Right now we're just trying to take things moment by moment and support each other through this unimaginable pain.' Imagine Prep at Coolidge released a statement on Saturday noting that they were devastated by the loss and are offering grief counselors and support staff for students on campus.   The comments below have not been moderated.
