Ayo Dosunmu to miss Game 6 with calf injury as Timberwolves' injury woes continue

David Berding / Getty Images Share article10MINNEAPOLIS — Ayo Dosunmu was scratched from Game 6 against Denver on Thursday night, the latest crushing loss to a depleted Minnesota Timberwolves roster. Dosunmu is out with a right calf injury, an issue that has plagued him off and on for several weeks. He joins Anthony Edwards (knee), Donte DiVincenzo (Achilles) and Kyle Anderson (illness) on the bench for the Wolves, who lead the series 3-2. Dosunmu has been a breakout performer in the playoffs. He was acquired from Chicago at the trade deadline in February and has fit seamlessly with a team that desperately needed his ballhandling, transition game and perimeter defense. He is averaging 21.8 points and 4.0 assists in the playoffs, including a 43-point explosion in a Game 4 win over Denver at Target Center. He was added to the injury report Wednesday, listed as questionable. He missed two games at the end of March and one in April with the injury. Calf issues have taken on an added gravity in the league over the last few years with the belief they can lead to Achilles tendon ruptures. The risk is even greater for Dosunmu, who is slated to be an unrestricted free agent this summer. “It’s just something he’s been dealing with for weeks now,” coach Chris Finch said. His absence puts even greater pressure on Minnesota’s depleted backcourt. The Wolves turned the ball over 25 times in Game 5 in Denver, the biggest reason they lost, while feeling the loss of Edwards and DiVincenzo, their starting guards all season long. The Wolves have 38-year-old Mike Conley and Bones Hyland, who is playing with a sore left knee, as their two primary ballhandlers at guard. Jaylen Clark could see some time, but he is not an initiator. Terrence Shannon Jr. is more of a small forward than a guard but will likely be called upon to fill in for some offensive punch.  The Wolves will also rely heavily on Julius Randle to be a point forward. Randle led the Timberwolves with 5.0 assists per game in the regular season. He is averaging 4.0 assists in this series. “That’s going to be super important for us tonight, no doubt about it,” Finch said. “We’ve just got to take care of the ball.” Spot the pattern.
