But the relationship began in violence and fire: according to the prevailing theory, the moon was formed around 4.5 billion years ago, when a huge planet known as Theia smashed into the Early Earth, tore out a piece of it, and flung it off into space, but just close enough to stay in our orbit.We’ve been circling each other ever since.
