Spotify takes on Google’s NotebookLM with its new app
One of the common features for companies to build in the age of AI is to connect services like email, calendar, documents, and notes to create a daily brief in text or audio format. Spotify is also giving in to this temptation and releasing a new standalone desktop app called Studio by Spotify Labs for this purpose. Today, the company released the ability for users to explore a topic by creating a podcast about it. Spotify is also adding personal context to this podcast generation tool. And, bec...
Spotify launches an ElevenLabs-powered audiobook creation tool
Alongside tools for AI-generated podcasts, Spotify on Thursday introduced a new, ElevenLabs-powered AI tool for self-publishing audiobooks within the Spotify for Authors platform. The company said at its Investor Day event that the feature will launch in beta this June on an invite-only basis, initially with support for the English language only. The AI-powered audiobook generation won’t bind authors to an exclusive contract, meaning they are free to publish their generated audiobooks anywhere.
Spotify adds AI-powered Q&A and briefing generation features to podcasts
For users, Spotify has been a place to consume podcasts made by other creators. The company wants to change that by introducing a personal podcast feature, which uses AI to generate podcasts for users based on an idea or a custom prompt. Earlier this month, the company released a GitHub-based command-line tool for Claude Code and Codex that allows users to create a podcast and save it to their own Spotify library. The company said that, soon, users would be able to create podcasts directly withi...

Anthropic’s Boris Cherny, who says engineering is ‘dead,’ says he is getting sick of vibe coding
Software engineering is evolving rapidly, with AI tools like Claude Code now generating production-grade code. Anthropic's Boris Cherny argues that terms like 'vibe coding' don't capture the sophistication of AI-assisted programming. He believes the future engineer will be a 'builder' directing AI, a significant paradigm shift the industry is embracing.
Waymo pauses Atlanta service as its robotaxis keep driving into floods
Waymo has now paused service in two cities because its robotaxis are struggling to deal with heavy rain and flooded roads, a problem that already prompted the company to issue a recall last week. One of Waymo’s robotaxis was spotted driving through a flooded street in Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday before it ultimately got stuck for about an hour, according to local news reports. The vehicle was recovered and removed from the scene, Waymo told TechCrunch. Waymo says it paused service in the city,...

I tested several cases for the Switch 2 and these are the best
You might find it kind of sad to put your hard-earned Switch 2 into a protective case. To me, it’s freeing. Sure, it can take away from the slick design. But using a case relieves me of the worry that the console will accumulate tons of little scratches, or worse. I’ve tested several types of cases on the Nintendo Switch 2 since it launched in in 2025, including flimsy shells that snap or slide onto the Switch 2 to provide a simple, aesthetically pleasing barrier from scratches to the c...

In a media landscape dominated by Baby Shark and Skibidi Toilet, one startup is reimagining children’s media by focusing on well-being, not watch time. Maka Kids is building a streaming app for children ages zero to six featuring content designed for healthy development. The startup has now raised $3 million in seed funding to scale its platform, and is currently accepting waitlist sign-ups.

Musk v. Altman: Much ado about nothing
Today I’m talking with Liz Lopatto, who spent the last month covering the Musk v. Altman trial in all its chaos. You’ll hear her describe the courthouse as a “zoo” and explain that there were protests of one kind or another happening outside every day. Both Elon Musk and Sam Altman are big personalities, and people have a lot of feelings about both of them and the AI industry. And in the end… nothing happened! The jury found that Elon had filed his lawsuit after the statute of limitati...
Google is pitching an AI agent ecosystem to consumers who may not buy it
One of the most promising introductions at Google’s I/O developer conference on Tuesday was a new way for consumers to use the web: AI agents. Unfortunately, it was also the most confusing. Google took the wraps off information agents, a reinvention of the aging Google Alerts service, now infused with AI. These AI agents are designed to operate in the background, 24/7, helping users stay up to date on topics they’re interested in, like market trends, price tracking, or inclement weather warnings...

Microsoft AI CEO gave these white-collar jobs 12-18 months before they are fully automated
Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman predicts white-collar jobs like lawyers and accountants could be fully automated within 12-18 months. He emphasizes AI will transform roles, shifting humans to oversight and strategic tasks, similar to how software engineers now use AI for coding. Doctors, for instance, may focus more on patient care and emotional support as AI handles diagnoses.

In its S-1 filing, SpaceX said that Anthropic agreed to pay $1.25 billion per month through May 2029 for access to SpaceX's AI training centers at Colossus I and Colossus II. That's $...
