Dünya sıralamasının 65. basamağında yer alan Zeynep Sönmez, ilk kez ana tabloda mücadele ettiği Roma Açık ilk turunda ev sahibi ülkeden klasmanın 265. basamağındaki Ruggeri ile karşılaştı. İlk sete tutuk başlayan ve sonradan açılan Zeynep, rakibi karşısında ilk seti 6-4 kaybetti. İkinci sete hızlı başlayan milli tenisçi, rakibinin servisini 3 kez kırarak seti 6-2 aldı ve maçta durumu 1-1'e getirdi.
