Ron Jenkins / Getty Images Share articleHOUSTON — The New York Yankees are calling up former top prospect Jasson Domínguez, a league source confirmed to The Athletic on Sunday. It’s expected that the Yankees will put designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list Monday after he felt tightness in his right calf Friday and didn’t play Saturday or Sunday against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park. The timing works well for the Yankees, who will face a trio of tough right-handers in Jack Leiter, Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi in Arlington against the Texas Rangers beginning Monday. Independent journalist Francys Romero first reported the decision to bring up Domínguez. Domínguez went into Sunday hitting .308 (4-for-13) with a home run versus southpaws at Triple A. Overall, he was hitting .326 with three home runs, 15 RBIs and a .893 OPS in 92 at-bats. He had nearly as many walks (13) as strikeouts (16). Domínguez will likely start at DH in each of the three games. Then the Yankees may need to decide what to do next with the former top prospect. They have an off day Thursday, and shortstop Anthony Volpe (left shoulder surgery) may be ready to finish his rehab assignment and make his season debut. The Yankees sent Domínguez to Triple A to start the season because they didn’t have a starting spot in the outfield for him after re-signing Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham in the offseason. While he’s a switch hitter, the Yankees needed a righty bat as their fourth outfielder, and they signed Randal Grichuk to a minor-league deal during spring training. Grichuk started slow, but he’s hit .333 (6-for-18) with four doubles over his last seven games. He’s hitting .194 overall. It’s unclear how much time Stanton could miss, though he didn’t sound overly concerned about his injury Saturday. He called it “not ideal,” especially after the Yankees didn’t suffer a single major injury all spring training and throughout April. The tennis elbow in both arms that kept him out of nearly all of the first half last year hasn’t been a problem this season so far for Stanton, who is hitting .256 with three home runs, 14 RBIs and a .724 OPS in 90 at-bats. The Yankees also sent righty starting pitcher Luis Gil to Triple A on Sunday after the Astros shelled him for six runs in four innings.
