A woman has been arrested and nine hospitalised after a high-speed car chase in east London.

Five people have been left with serious injuries after the high-speed police pursuit ended in a crash, which involved two vehicles and a moped.

Officers attempted to stop a vehicle they believed had been stolen in the early hours of Saturday morning, but the car continued on and a chase began shortly after midnight.

The pursuit came to an end when the car collided with another vehicle at the junction of Barley Lane and High Road in Ilford, according to the BBC.

Ten people were injured in total, including those inside both cars and a moped rider.

Nine of the injured were taken to hospital - where five remain with serious injuries.

One person declined further medical assistance at the scene.

The driver of the pursued car, a woman in her 20s, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft and failing to stop - she remains in hospital.

Four passengers from the same vehicle were also arrested on suspicion of being in a stolen vehicle.

They include a woman in her 40s, a 14-year-old girl and two men in their 20s.

London Air Ambulance attended the scene alongside multiple ambulance crews and other specialist medical responders.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said they had dispatched ambulance crews, an incident response officer, a joint response unit, an advanced paramedic practitioner and members of the Hazardous Area Response Team in addition to the air ambulance.

The spokesman said: "We treated 10 patients at the scene and took nine to hospital. One person declined further aid."

Farhan, a witness who works at a pizza restaurant near the scene, described hearing a police siren followed by "a really loud bang" shortly after midnight.

He said he ran outside after hearing the collision and saw several police cars travelling east along High Road in Goodmayes, heading from Seven Kings towards Chadwell Heath, which he believed were involved in the pursuit.

The witness said he then observed two men, who appeared to be in their early twenties, get out of the car he believed had been followed by police, adding they both appeared to be injured.

Whilst investigations continue, the road remains closed and the police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.

The Metropolitan Police said the case had been referred to its Directorate of Professional Standards, which is standard procedure following any police pursuit that results in a collision.

The force also confirmed the Independent Office for Police Conduct had been informed, in line with standard protocols that apply whenever someone is seriously injured following contact with police.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said it had been notified of the incident but did not attend the scene and would review whether any further action was required.
