Microsoft will introduce a new Cloud Rebuild feature, designed to restore your laptop or desktop PC without the need for a USB flash drive containing a clean version of Windows 11. Until now, that has been the main way to revive a PC after a crash or when the operating system becomes corrupt.
As the name suggests, this relies on the internet — also known as "the cloud" — to collate the necessary files and drivers to reinstall the desktop operating system. The feature is being trialled by Windows Insiders testing the latest preview versions, with a wider rollout to all Windows 11 users expected in the coming months.
Cloud Rebuild isn't something you'll need to use very often (fingers crossed), as it won't keep your files or installed applications around. Instead, this is a top-to-bottom reinstall of the entire operating system — like a brand-new PC that's never been used before. You'll need to sign in to everything and reinstall the apps you need, so it's something you'll only want to do if you've experienced a catastrophic failure.

Cloud Restore works even if your PC can't turn on, providing a vital lifeline.
Unlike the similar functionality of Reset this PC, which gives you the option to keep all your data when you restore your computer, Cloud Rebuild wipes everything clean. It's designed purely for situations where you need a completely fresh start with your Windows installation.
Your PC will come back with the operating system and all the right drivers installed, but nothing else.
The automatic driver downloads are particularly brilliant if you happen to own one of those handheld gaming PCs running Windows 11. Reinstalling drivers on those devices can be quite fiddly, especially when you don't have all your usual keyboards and mice handy to navigate through everything easily.
Cloud Rebuild sorts all of that out for you automatically, which saves you loads of time compared to hunting down and manually installing each driver yourself. As for when you'll actually get access to this feature, it's rolling out gradually. Windows Insiders can try it now in the latest preview builds, but if you're running the standard version of Windows 11, you'll need to wait a bit longer.
The good news is that the wider release should arrive within the next few months, so it won't be too long before everyone can benefit.
