Alex Albon and Williams have decided to stick rather than twist with the Thai driver committing to the British team for the 2027 season – but why? The 2026 Formula 1 campaign has not turned out the way Williams or their drivers Albon and Carlos Sainz had hoped after the squad finished a superb P5 last year. The car was overweight and underdeveloped at the start of 2026 and has since spent most of its time scrapping away in the midfield and rarely fast enough for points. They are currently ninth of 11 teams. As a result, Albon – who joined the team in 2022 and has since gone to make the most race starts of any driver for Wiliams – and Sainz were pondering their respective futures. Both had multi-year deals, but there are believed to have been clauses within those arrangements that would allow them to leave the team at the end of the year. Williams were naturally very keen to keep Albon. Boss James Vowles considers him one of the "best drivers on the grid" and has seen first-hand how he can make the most of a car when it's performing and do the best he can when it's not. Teams' Championship after Hungarian Grand Prix Keeping hold of Albon considering the team's current plight is a shot in the arm for Vowles, who will have known that his squad in their current form are not a particularly attractive proposition at the moment. For Albon, he considered his options but the market has been a bit stuck. As a result he and his management team couldn't see something that was definitely better than what they have. At least Albon knows what he's got to work with at Williams. He's seen them bounce back from struggles and he's seen them go on very strong runs of form. He also gets on very well with the team, who in turn get on very well with him. In the announcement, he spoke of how the team "needed this tough moment to really accelerate some of the aggressive plans to fix some core problems within the car that have plagued us for years". If Williams have truly fixed those problems and can turn things around for 2027, he knows he will be well-placed to capitalise on that. It's a big show of faith in Vowles and his vision for the future. Clearly, Albon believes that can achieve the team's lofty ambitions of returning to the sharp end of the field and will hope 2026 is just a blip. With all that in mind, the relevant options in his contract were triggered that sees him extend his stay with Williams into 2027. If Williams deliver next year, there's no reason why they won't continue again. But if it doesn't go so well, and with more seats expected to open up for 2028, Albon will have more options if he wants to make a move.
