A well-loved beach on Anglesey was cleared after an item resembling unexploded ordnance was discovered. Police officers were summoned to Porth Dafarch on Holy Island on Friday afternoon (May 29). The Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Search Regiment, commonly known as the "Bomb Squad", was reportedly notified. However, it had not yet attended the location as of Saturday morning. Porth Dafarch beach is situated in a protected cove featuring a stretch of sand surrounded by rock pools. Managed by the National Trust, it's a favoured spot for water sports including kayaking and paddleboarding. Yesterday's alarm was raised by a member of the public. The beach remained shut for approximately two hours with the Bomb Squad anticipated to arrive in the early hours of Saturday morning. Observing the situation was Adam Rossington, proprietor of Licence To Grill, a well-regarded food van stationed at the beach. It offers freshly prepared, locally sourced seafood, burgers and ice creams, reports North Wales Live . Adam said: "Someone had reported it in the morning but the tide came in and the item couldn't be located. The police had to evacuate the beach just in case. "As the tide had covered the object, the police said it was low risk to the public." He added: "Later, when the tide went out, the beach was closed for about two hours, reopening about 6ish. We haven't seen any police since then. "The police said officers would come down at midnight as the tide was changing, just in case anyone came to the beach. But no one showed. "The Bomb Squad was due to come at 4am at low water – apparently they were coming from three-and-a-half hours away. But I've not seen or heard anything else since." Adam can verify that the object is solid, having carried out a "kick test" on it. "First thing I did," he admitted. "I thought it was a rock! It was definitely metal and old." While the rusting object is vaguely "bomb-shaped", locals suspect it may be part of an old cast iron bollard that previously lined the seafront before being substituted with wooden ones. Others, however, reckon it to be a section of a boat mooring post. According to regular beachgoers, the same object prompted a visit from the Bomb Squad approximately 15 years ago. Online, a woman said: "Same thing happened a few years ago. Wish they would just remove it!" Adam will be hoping the beach remains open over the weekend – he's expecting a run on his Fizz Bomb Sundae.
