Voters deliver their verdict on Melania Trump's rare and mysterious public appearances

By NIKKI SCHWAB, CHIEF CAMPAIGN CORRESPONDENT Published: 00:28, 1 June 2026 | Updated: 00:28, 1 June 2026 Voters are split on whether they want to see more or less of First Lady Melania Trump, or if she's doing things just right.  President Donald Trump's spouse only does a handful of public events each month and made the notable decision to not move into the White House right away, when her husband was first inaugurated.  At the same time, Melania has received bipartisan praise for lobbying Congress on issues she cares about - a more direct approach than what first ladies generally utilize.  Such as when she delivered a rare statement from the White House's Cross Hall, distancing herself from serial pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, an act that took White House aides by surprise.  In the latest Daily Mail/JL Partners poll, registered voters were asked if Melania should do more public events, fewer public events or continue at her current level.  The biggest swath of voters, 40 percent, said Melania should stick to the current level - where she's seen two or three times a month.  Melania was last spotted alongside her husband at the Congressional Picnic on May 19.  First Lady Melania Trump (right) stands cheek to cheek with President Donald Trump (left) on the Truman Balcony on May 19 as the first couple hosted lawmakers to the White House for the annual Congressional Picnic  Your browser does not support iframes. She skipped the President's trip to China this month, but helped him host King Charles and Queen Camilla at the White House in late April.  Melania accompanied the President to the White House Correspondents' Dinner in late April, where a shooting incident derailed the whole event.  She wasn't on hand to observe Memorial Day, leaving that job to Vice President JD Vance and War Secretary Pete Hegseth, who are both veterans.  But earlier in the month she had hosted an East Room event for military mothers.   Despite her relatively low profile, 26 percent of respondents still said they'd like to see Melania less.  Not surprisingly, Democrats were more likely to say they didn't want to see more of Mrs. Trump - with 39 percent of Democratic voters choosing that option.  Black voters also wanted to see less of the First Lady - with 40 percent picking that preference.  Overall, 21 percent of voters encouraged Melania to make more public outings. Melania Trump (right)  Republicans were more prone to say that Melania was doing just the right amount of public appearances than pushing her to do more.  The poll found that 51 percent of GOP voters believed Melania was doing the right amount of public appearances, while 29 percent of Republican voters encouraged her to get out more.  Only 12 percent of GOP voters wanted to see the First Lady less.  The Daily Mail/JL Partners poll was conducted May 15-18 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percent.   The comments below have not been moderated.
