It was Volkswagen’s first car developed specifically for India and was aimed at the booming sub-4-metre compact sedan segment. The problem was that Volkswagen took its time getting there. The Polo was already 3,971mm long, leaving the engineers with barely 29mm to play with if they wanted to stay under the crucial four-metre limit. Volkswagen essentially had to turn a hatchback into a compact sedan while squeezing the car under the tax threshold. And so, the Ameo arrived with a boot grafted onto the Polo’s architecture. It was an interesting engineering exercise. But there was one problem: by the time Volkswagen got there, the market had already started moving. The Ameo was launched with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine making around 75hp. A much better 1.5-litre diesel followed later, along with a DSG automatic. The car itself was not bad. In fact, the diesel-DSG combination was arguably one of the more interesting powertrain options in the segment. But the Ameo was late to the party. Indian buyers were beginning to move away from compact sedans and towards SUVs. And Volkswagen had spent years preparing for yesterday’s market. Ten years later, Volkswagen is making the same bet, but with an SUV This time, Volkswagen has picked the right body style. A lot of compact sedans came and went but the only sub-4 metre still standing strong is the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. The sub-4-metre SUV segment is one of India’s biggest and most fiercely contested automotive battlegrounds. The Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Kia Sonet and Skoda Kylaq are already fighting for buyers. Now Volkswagen wants a piece of it. And this isn't a small-volume experiment. The company desperately needs a product that can expand its customer base beyond the Virtus and Taigun. The new SUV will use the MQB-A0-IN platform, which already underpins the Taigun, Virtus, Kushaq and Slavia. The upcoming SUV is also expected to share components and its 1.0-litre TSI engine with the Kylaq. In the Skoda, the engine produces 115bhp and 178Nm and can be paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. That should help Volkswagen keep development and production costs under control. But good cars alone haven't been enough for VW and Skoda. Volkswagen has never really struggled to make cars that enthusiasts like. The Polo became a cult favourite. The Vento was a solid driver's car. The Virtus and Taigun have also built a loyal following. But India’s mass market doesn't buy cars based purely on how well they drive. Price, features, mileage, safety, ownership costs, service reach and resale value all matter. And this is where Volkswagen has traditionally struggled against Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors.The new SUV has to change that. It has to retain Volkswagen’s strengths — driving dynamics, safety and build quality — while being priced aggressively enough to attract buyers who may otherwise walk into a Hyundai or Tata showroom. Just ask Skoda.The Kylaq has shown how tough this segment is The Skoda Kylaq is already doing the hard work of establishing the Volkswagen Group in this segment. It has found a respectable customer base, but its monthly volumes remain far below those of the segment leaders. The Tata Nexon, for instance, can sell several times the Kylaq’s monthly volume. That tells you everything about the challenge Volkswagen is walking into. The sub-4-metre SUV market is not short of good products. It is short of space. Volkswagen cannot simply build a Kylaq with a different grille and badge. The new SUV will need its own identity, design, cabin and feature mix while retaining enough mechanical commonality to make financial sense.The Ameo lesson matters here That is what makes the 2027 SUV more interesting than just another new launch. Volkswagen has already learnt what happens when it enters a segment late. The Ameo was designed around an important Indian requirement, the four-metre tax rule, but the company took too long to bring it to market. By the time it arrived, customer preferences had changed. The new SUV is a very different proposition. Volkswagen is entering an established and growing SUV segment. The platform is already localised. The engine is proven. Manufacturing is already set up for MQB-A0-IN products. And the company has a much better understanding of what Indian buyers expect. It also has the benefit of hindsight. The Ameo tried to make Volkswagen accessible by shrinking the Polo and adding a boot. The new SUV will attempt something more ambitious: make Volkswagen accessible without making it feel like a stripped-down Volkswagen. That could be the difference. This time, Volkswagen needs the small SUV to work Volkswagen's new sub-4-metre SUV will not have the novelty of the Polo, what it will have is something far more important: the right segment, the right platform and a market that is hungry for compact SUVs. But that does not guarantee success. The Venue, Nexon, Brezza, XUV 3XO and Sonet are already well-established. Even Volkswagen’s own sibling, the Kylaq, is fighting for the same customers. For Volkswagen, the challenge will be to get three things right: price, positioning and product differentiation. Get those right and the new SUV could finally give Volkswagen the volumes it has been chasing in India. Get them wrong, and the company could end up repeating an old mistake, arriving with a good car, only to discover that the market has already moved on. The Ameo was Volkswagen’s attempt to build the right car for India. The 2027 SUV is its second attempt. Only this time, Volkswagen has chosen an SUV instead of a sedan.
