The Virginia Tech Hokies and head coach Mike Young are looking to improve on a 2025-26 season that saw them miss out on the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season. To be fair to Young and the Hokies, their 19-13 record was the inverse of their 13-19 record from 2024-25. However, this program has never made it to a Final Four, and VT has made the tournament just six times since the turn of the century. There's a lot of work to do for Young and the Hokies, but they did pick up a transfer portal commitment who should improve their odds for 2026-27. That commitment came from former Oklahoma State combo guard Jaylen Curry. Curry averaged 10.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this past season for the Cowboys. BREAKING: Oklahoma State transfer guard Jaylen Curry has committed to Virginia Tech, @JoeTipton reportshttps://t.co/MorD1lSVIl pic.twitter.com/CZ35uXkIrf Curry is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina. He's a former three-star recruit who was ranked as the No. 22 point guard in the 2023 class. He committed to UMass out of high school and became a great player in the Atlantic 10. As a freshman, he was a bench player for the Minutemen, but he averaged 7.4 points and 2.1 assists in 17.4 minutes per game. Curry started all 29 games for UMass as a sophomore while averaging 13.3 points, 3.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He had the nation's 22nd-best assist-to-turnover ratio (2.67-to-1) in that season. After transferring to Oklahoma State, Curry found a role as a rotational combo guard for head coach Steve Lutz. He played in just 23.8 minutes per game, but he made the most of his time on the court. He was a great defensive presence for the Cowboys, leading the team in steals while notching 13 games with two or more steals. He also shot 41.8% from the field and 31.6% from three, on 2.4 attempts per game. Chris Arvin of "VT Scoop" believes Curry will play a similar role for the Hokies that he did with Oklahoma State. He'll get the chance to be a starter, but he'll likely slot in as the first man off the bench behind Ben Hammond and Isaiah Elohim.
