Outline planning permission was granted for up to 300 homes in Teynham, Kent, in June 2021. Chartway Partnerships Group then set to work on the roads which would connect the new build estate - called Frognal Place - to the A2 London Road. But construction stalled and the firm has now quit, it is understood - leaving building firm Moat to try and find another contractor to continue the project. Locals said the site has been abandoned for more than a year and have labelled half-built access roads and an unused roundabout an 'eyesore'. Teynham resident of 13 years, Nigel Heriz-Smith, said: 'Personally I would rather it were not developed, just because it sits in the middle of the modern built-up area of town. 'It shocks me that something which has been approved for so many years and looked like it was going to move ahead, and now the developers are pulling away. 'Is that, and I think it may be, because there isn't really the demand for housing here? Conservative local councillor Julien Speed has been campaigning against the homes since before he was elected. He said: 'It's a total eyesore - they started building the access roads and the roundabout and then abruptly stopped. 'For months they had all their construction equipment there, which made the whole place look like a complete tip. 'Since then, they have removed it - but as you come into town on your left-hand side it looks like a complete unfinished building site. 'It looks absolutely terrible.' Councillor Speed said residents now fear it will take years of further disruption before work is completed. He added: 'They're currently undertaking a procurement process to find a construction partner to build all the roads. 'That has to be done first, until that is sorted they're not going to be able to restart work. 'They've told me they're hoping to restart work towards the end of this year, but it may not be until the beginning of next year. 'Sentiment has run very high - people are really unhappy about it. 'I think people realise there's not much that can be done - there's nothing that can be done to stop it happening, it is going ahead. Chartway Partnership Group has pulled out of the development. Sarah Butler, director of development and sales at housing developer Moat, said: 'We recognise the strong community that already exists in Teynham, and we want to contribute positively to that by creating a place that all residents can be proud of and enjoy. 'That vision hasn't changed - our plan is still to deliver the homes and community spaces, including the sports facilities, allotments and orchard. 'We've started the process to find a contractor to help us achieve this. 'We'll be providing nearby residents with regular updates as our plans progress.' Chartway Partnerships Group and Moat Homes were contacted by The Daily Mail for comment. A spokesperson said previously: 'Development projects often evolve over time and changes in housebuilder involvement are not uncommon in the industry. 'Decisions of this nature are typically influenced by a range of factors, and this does not reflect on the site's long-term potential to provide homes for local people.'
