Mitch McConnell has ended weeks of silence about his health, issuing a statement on Sunday afternoon following more than three weeks in hospital.

The 84-year-old former Senate majority leader was rushed to medics after suffering a fall last month - sparking speculation that he was severely ill or even "brain dead".

But last night, Mr McConnell released a new photograph from a hospital bed alongside his wife, Elaine Chao.

The 84-year-old ruled out several serious conditions, stating he had not suffered broken bones, a concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumours or haemorrhages.

However, he confirmed he was briefly knocked unconscious and has been battling a mild case of pneumonia during his hospital stay.

The Senator has now been transferred to a rehabilitation centre to regain his strength.

"My doctors have confirmed that I didn't break any bones or suffer a concussion," he said, adding: "I didn't have a heart attack or a stroke. I don't have any tumours or haemorrhages.

"But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I've also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia."

Mr McConnell added that it was hard to discuss his health publicly.

"You all know how folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older. Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct I can't help it", he said.

"But at the same time, I've had more than my share of experience with physical vulnerabilities. Surviving childhood polio meant spending my entire life with mobility challenges. They haven't exactly gotten easier to manage with age. And last month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital."

Mr McConnell also confirmed he would not be returning to the Senate floor to cast votes in the near future.

"As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time," he said,

"But rest assured that, in the meantime, I'm not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you. I've been working closely with my legislative staff on current issues, and with my Kentucky team.

"I've also been keeping in touch with my Senate colleagues on the appropriations process, midterm politics, and everything in between", he said.

The Kentucky Senator pledged to continue working towards returning to his duties.

"I still have unfinished business to complete on your behalf," he said, addressing Kentucky voters, "and I have every intention of finishing the job you elected me to do."

His statement came after intense speculation about his condition, including claims from right-wing influencer Laura Loomer that he was "brain dead".

"This is a massive cover-up. President Trump, they are trying to screw you!!!!! The Rinos want the Save America Act and our country to die alongside Mitch McConnell!" she said.

The Senator has a lengthy history of health concerns.

Emergency responders reportedly performed CPR on someone at his Washington home last month after being called to a cardiac arrest.

He also froze twice while answering questions in 2023 and was hospitalised for a concussion after a fall that year.

Mr McConnell, first elected in 1984, has attributed his mobility difficulties to childhood polio and occasionally uses a wheelchair.
