The WSL champions confirmed on Friday that Coffey had “minor” surgery and will undergo rehabilitation with their medical team to prepare for next season. City haven’t listed a timetable for her return but a USWNT spokesperson confirmed to The Athletic that they have been in contact with her and the midfielder is expected to miss their June camp. The surgery marks the first significant injury setback of Coffey’s career after the midfielder emerged as one of the NWSL’s most consistent players with Portland and the USWNT. “Everyone at City would like to wish Sam the very best in her recovery and looks forward to seeing her back out on the pitch soon,” the team said on Friday. Coffey, 27, transitioned to Manchester City from the Portland Thorns in January and signed a deal through 2029 worth $875,000, according to sources briefed on the deal. She quickly established herself as a central figure in City’s midfield after arriving from Portland in January, making 10 appearances as the club secured a return to European competition next season. The U.S. international had captained the Thorns during the 2025 NWSL season after spending her entire professional career in Portland following her selection out of Penn State in the 2022 draft.
