UK snow maps show 24-hour blizzard to batter parts of the UK in May freeze

Parts of the UK could be battered by snowfall, according to fresh weather maps. Predictions from WXCharts indicate the wintry conditions arriving over Scotland and sections of northern England from approximately 6pm on Sunday, May 10. The flurries could persist over a 24-hour window until roughly 6pm on Monday, May 11, reaching as far south as Leicester. Forecasters say the snowfall will be most heavily concentrated across central and eastern Scotland, around Glasgow and Aberdeen, with scattered spells around Manchester , Cumbria and Leicester. Weather projections also indicate intermittent rainfall across much of the UK on Sunday evening, including near London in the southeast. The shift in weather, following temperatures of up to 25C last week, will be accompanied by a temperature plunge to as low as -8C in Scotland and just below freezing in northern England areas. The Met Office's long-range forecast for May 10 to May 19 also cautions of "heavy and locally thundery" rain showers across sections of England and Wales. The national forecaster states next week will probably bring "widely unsettled conditions" with temperatures "near or below average, especially in the north, with an ongoing risk of overnight rural frost", reports the Express . But temperatures have been generally above average recently, with the Met Office recording a high of 17.6C on Thursday at Heathrow Airport in west London. It was also 17C at various spots across the Midlands, including Coton in the Elms in Derbyshire and in Redditch in Worcestershire. Today: Cloudy across the north with some heavy shower for northern England later. Elsewhere, sunny spells with further showers developing, heaviest across Wales, the Midlands, southern and eastern England. Slightly warmer for most but cooler across the northwest. Tonight: Evening showers fade leaving clear spells. Some rain may persist in far northern England. Local frost in the northwest, with rural grass frost and isolated fog patches south. Saturday: Band of rain moves south across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England. Scattered heavy showers in Wales and the Midlands. Brighter further north. Warm in the south, colder further north.
