The Minnesota Twins prospect is scheduled to undergo surgery next week to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. Rodriguez originally suffered the injury sliding into first base May 1. At the time, it was believed to be only a strain. When the pain persisted even as the swelling subsided, a second MRI was performed, which revealed the torn UCL, the Twins said. A timeline for Rodriguez’s recovery won’t be shared until after the procedure is completed. Rodriguez was hitting .247/.417/.506 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in 25 games at Triple-A St. Paul. “There was a lot of swelling,” Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll said. “The experts were not able to see into the joint there on the initial set of images, and when he still had the pain persisting here, that hadn’t fully dissipated, that’s what led to the follow-up images and updated diagnosis.” The thumb injury is the latest injury setback for Rodriguez, whom The Athletic’s Keith Law ranked 57th in his list of top 100 prospects in January. In a career that began in 2021, Rodriguez has never played more than 99 games in a season and is averaging 59 per year. Over the past four seasons, Rodriguez has dealt with injuries to his left thumb, right thumb, right hip, oblique, abdomen and left knee. He spent part of the offseason at home in the Dominican Republic before traveling to Tampa, Fla., for specialized work with an athletic trainer. Spot the pattern.
