Kenneth Richmond / Getty Images Share articleMINNEAPOLIS – One day after Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran said he was told to kill himself by a fan at Target Field — a jab at his mental health that prompted him to respond with an obscene gesture — a person briefed on the situation said on Wednesday that an investigation by the Minnesota Twins has yet to corroborate details about the incident. “We were made aware of the situation late (Tuesday) and are looking into it,” the Twins said in a statement early Wednesday. “There’s no place in our game for conduct like that.” After Tuesday’s game, Duran relayed the comment he heard to kill himself was a direct reference to a revelation he made last year, when he shared that he had once attempted to take his own life amidst mental health struggles. “Somebody told me to kill myself,” Duran said. “I’m used to it at this point. S— happens. I’m going to flip somebody off if they say something to me. It is what it is. I shouldn’t react like that, but that stuff is still kind of triggering. It happens.” Duran said he didn’t tell manager Alex Cora or his teammates about the comment he said he heard because he didn’t want to be a distraction to the team. “Honestly, it’s my fault for talking about my mental health because I kind of brought in the haters,” Duran said of the comment he heard. “It’s something I’ve got to get used to.” Because Duran didn’t alert his teammates, coaches or security personnel, a Twins official said the club was unaware of the alleged incident until after the game. A league source said multiple people seated in the area had been interviewed. One person with knowledge of the event said fans were bragging afterward that Duran had raised his middle finger at them after they had mocked his swing. Though the announced crowd was 16,220, only about 10,000 fans were in attendance at Target Field. In spite of the subdued crowd noise, field and television microphones didn’t pick up fans yelling for Duran to harm himself or mocking his swing. Additional audio or video of the incident has yet to surface on social media or in the public sphere. After Wednesday’s 9-5 series-ending victory, the Red Sox declined comment on the Twins’ investigation, though the team reiterated its support for Duran. “We fully support Jarren,” a Red Sox statement read. “He spoke after the game and took full accountability for his reaction in the moment. Comments directed at players that cross the line have no place in our game. Jarren has been open about his struggles with mental health and using that as a point of attack is unacceptable.” Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms
