Çin'in BM Daimi Temsilcisi Fu Cong ve BM Genel Sekreteri Antonio Guterres’e hitaben yazılan mektupta Yıldız, Yunanistan’ın “Türk Boğazları” ifadesine itiraz etmesini “iç siyasi çıkarlara hizmet etmeyi amaçladığını” ve “talihsiz bulduklarını” belirtti. Yıldız, “Türkiye, Yunanistan'ın temelsiz iddialarını kesin ve tamamen reddeder. Yaygın olarak kullanılan coğrafi bir terimi siyasallaştırma girişimleri, yapıcı diyaloğa, bölgesel istikrara veya 1936 Montrö Sözleşmesi rejiminin doğru anlaşılmasına katkıda bulunmaz.” dedi. "Türk Boğazları" teriminin, İstanbul ve Çanakkale boğazlarını topluca ifade eden, yerleşik bir coğrafi terim olduğunu ve bunların Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin egemenliği altında bulunduğunu vurgulayan Yıldız, “'Türk Boğazları' terimi tanımlayıcı, coğrafi olarak doğru ve Montrö Sözleşmesi'nin devam eden uygulamasıyla tamamen uyumludur.” ifadelerini kullandı. Yıldız, tamamen bir devletin egemenliği altında bulunan coğrafi mekanların yetkili makamlar tarafından belirlenen resmi isimlerle kullanılabileceğine işaret ederek, bu bağlamda, "Türk Boğazları" teriminin, Uluslararası Denizcilik Teşkilatı (IMO) ve NATO'nun kararları ve belgeleri de dahil olmak üzere çok sayıda uluslararası belgede geleneksel ve tutarlı bir şekilde kullanıldığının altını çizdi. Ayrıca 1936 Montrö Sözleşmesi'nin İstanbul Boğazı, Marmara Denizi ve Çanakkale Boğazı'ndan geçişleri düzenleyen yasal bir sözleşme olduğuna işaret eden Yıldız, bu amacın ötesinde, sözleşmenin coğrafi isimleri standartlaştırmayı amaçlamadığını belirtti. Bu çerçevede “Yunanistan’ın Türk Boğazları dışında bir terminolojiyi dayatma girişimlerinin ancak tarihsel özlemlerle gerekçelendirilebileceğini” vurgulayan Yıldız, “Bu girişimler Türk Boğazları'nın ne yasal ne de siyasi statüsünü değiştirmeyecektir.” ifadelerini paylaştı. Türkiye’nin, egemenliği ve yargı yetkisi doğrultusunda "Türk Boğazları" terimini kullanmaya devam edeceğini vurgulayan Yıldız, Yunanistan da dahil olmak üzere tüm BM üyesi devletlerin bu yerleşik ve meşru kullanıma saygı göstermesini beklediklerini kaydetti. Türkiye'nin BM Daimi Temsilcisi Büyükelçi Ahmet Yıldız, 29 Nisan’da, "Denizcilik alanında su yollarının güvenliği ve korunması" başlığıyla toplanan ve Hürmüz Boğazı’ndaki güncel durumun da ele alındığı BM Güvenlik Konseyindeki konuşmasında İstanbul ve Çanakkale boğazları için “Türk Boğazları” ifadesini kullanmış ve Türkiye’nin boğazlarda seyrüsefer serbestisinin sağlanması için aldığı önlemleri sıralamıştı. Bunun üzerine Yunanistan temsilcisi, toplantı gündeminin dışına çıkarak “Türk Boğazları” teriminin kullanımının, 1936 Montrö Sözleşmesi'yle tutarlı olmadığını öne sürerek, uygun terminolojinin “Boğazlar” ve özellikle “Çanakkale Boğazı, Marmara Denizi ve İstanbul Boğazı” şeklinde olduğunu iddia etmişti. BM Güvenlik Konseyinde yaşanan “Türk Boğazları” tartışmasına Yunan basını da geniş yer vermişti. Yunanistan’ın coğrafi isimlerin ulusal resmi formlarıyla kullanılmasına öncelik veren yerleşik uluslararası uygulama ve ilkelere rağmen uzun yıllardır sadece BM’de değil NATO’da da Türk Boğazları teriminin kullanımı nedeniyle İttifak çalışmalarını bloke etmeye çalıştığı biliniyor.
