Turkey Warns of Escalating Israeli Strikes in Syria

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan issued a stark warning that Israel’s continued military operations inside Syria constitute a “great danger” to regional stability and to Turkey’s own security interests. His remarks, delivered during a session at the Anadolu Agency Editor’s Desk in Ankara, underscored Ankara’s growing concern over the trajectory of the conflict.

Fidan said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears intent on casting Turkey as a new adversary following the confrontation with Iran. He described this as part of a broader effort to reshape the regional landscape by expanding the circle of confrontation.

According to Fidan, Israel “cannot live without an enemy,” and Netanyahu has shown a consistent inclination to widen the arena of political rivalry in ways that now encompass Turkey. He cautioned that the current Israeli pause in Syria—driven by its focus on Iran—should not be interpreted as a long-term shift in policy. The underlying posture, he said, remains unchanged and could reassert itself once Israel recalibrates its priorities.

Fidan stressed the need for a regional framework that upholds the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, anchored in clear and mutually respected security arrangements. Without such commitments, he warned, the region risks sliding into deeper instability.

Turning to the Eastern Mediterranean, Fidan criticized the strategic cooperation between Israel, Greece, and Cyprus, arguing that it does little to foster confidence among neighboring states. Instead, he said, the partnership heightens tensions and complicates an already fragile regional environment.
