By JAMES GORDON, US NEWS REPORTER Published: 01:01, 17 May 2026 | Updated: 01:01, 17 May 2026 President Donald Trump has unveiled dramatic new images of the revamped Reflecting Pool stretching between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, boasting how the iconic landmark is being transformed into a gleaming centerpiece ahead of America's 250th birthday celebrations. Posting a pair of striking sunset photographs to Truth Social on Saturday night, Trump hailed the restoration as a 'very exciting project' and promised the sprawling water feature would be ready before the Fourth of July. The images showed the partially refilled Reflecting Pool shimmering like glass beneath dramatic evening skies, with near-perfect mirror reflections of both the Lincoln Memorial and the towering Washington Monument captured in the water. 'Sample test of the Reflecting Pool with the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument in the background - at each end of the Pool - which is, by the way, the World's longest,' Trump wrote. The president said the project had evolved far beyond its original scope as he pushed for what he described as a more beautiful and longer-lasting redesign. 'Should be completed before the Fourth of July, our target date,' Trump wrote.  'Have substantially upgraded construction materials, including surface qualities, sandblasting granite, and exterior stone and walkways.  One image showed the Washington Monument perfectly mirrored in the water beneath dramatic clouds at sunset Another photograph captured the Lincoln Memorial reflected across the newly resurfaced pool during a glowing evening sky Trump previously posted side-by-side images comparing the Reflecting Pool under himself and former president Barack Obama, whom he referred to as ‘Hussein Obama’, as he mocked the earlier Obama-era renovation costs 'I've made this a much larger job than originally contemplated for purposes of Beauty, and a much longer life,' he added. Trump also revealed that crews had moved to a 'higher quality sealer with more reflectivity' in an effort to intensify the mirror-like effect visible in the newly released photos. 'Check it out before the Opening - It's a very exciting project!' he declared. The dramatic makeover of one of America's most recognizable landmarks has become one of the most high-profile beautification efforts of Trump's second term, with the president personally championing the overhaul. The Reflecting Pool, lined by elm trees along the National Mall, occupies a sacred place in American history. It famously served as the backdrop for Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech during the 1963 March on Washington and remains one of the most visited sites in the nation's capital. But Trump has repeatedly argued the basin had fallen into embarrassing disrepair. Speaking previously about the project, the president complained the pool had become 'filthy' and claimed it had been 'leaking like a sieve for many years.'  The Dome of the US Capitol Building, and the Washington Monument are visible as workers apply a coat of paint to the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall  Trump has ordered a renovation to paint the drained pool with a blue liner to change its gray concrete bottom to 'American Flag Blue' Workers paint the Reflecting Pool blue at the directive of President Donald Trump Trump has said the project will be completed in time for the July 4th celebrations. This photo was taken on Thursday Ed Weiskopf, wearing a mask he ordered online of President Donald Trump, dances as workers nearby apply a blue protective coating as part of the Reflecting Pool renovation project A view from the Lincoln Memorial gives a good view of the painting of the reflecting pool Trump said he was inspired to act after a friend visiting from Germany criticized the condition of the landmark. The president has framed the restoration as a triumph of private-sector efficiency and business know-how, contrasting his approach with a far more extensive Obama-era renovation completed in 2012. Last month, Trump mocked the previous restoration efforts overseen during the administration of Barack Obama, claiming he was able to dramatically slash costs and speed up construction timelines. Trump said the latest project was originally expected to cost roughly $301 million and take years to complete before he intervened with an alternative plan centered around resurfacing rather than fully replacing the stone lining. 'I do many such things for Government and, as President, it is my Honor to do so,' Trump wrote in an earlier Truth Social post. He also revealed he abandoned an initial idea for a tropical turquoise finish after contractors instead persuaded him to embrace what he called 'American flag blue.' 'You're going to end up with a beautiful, beautiful reflecting pool,' Trump said previously. 'The way it's supposed to be, much better than it ever was.' The iconic Reflecting Pool sits between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument on the National Mall and famously served as the backdrop for Martin Luther King Jr.’s August 1963 ‘I Have a Dream’ speech Supporters have praised the renovation as another example of Trump applying his real-estate background to public projects. But the overhaul has also ignited fierce backlash from critics who accuse Trump of politicizing and reshaping national landmarks in his own image. The nonprofit Cultural Landscape Foundation has filed a lawsuit seeking to halt the project, reportedly describing the blue resurfacing plan as 'desecration.' Critics have also raised concerns over reported cost increases and allegations surrounding the contracting process. According to reporting from The New York Times, the project's price tag may already have climbed substantially above Trump's original public estimates. The comments below have not been moderated.
