'Toxic' smoke warning for Port Adelaide as sulphur burns in an industrial fire

By CAITLIN POWELL - NEWS REPORTER Published: 04:09, 6 August 2026 | Updated: 04:26, 6 August 2026 An evacuation order has been issued and one person rushed to hospital as an ‘extremely dangerous’ fire burns at a Port Adelaide building containing sulphur. South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service issued a warning on Thursday afternoon for Moonta Road in the port-side suburb as smoke moved towards the city's CBD. 'There is a 1km evacuation zone, due to a structure fire which is burning sulphur and producing large volumes of smoke,' the notice said. 'Anyone located within 1km of Moonta Road, Port Adelaide, should leave immediately. 'Do not enter the area - it is extremely dangerous. Emergency services are on scene, the smoke is consider toxic.' The SA Ambulance Service told ABC News that one person was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital. Dramatic photos showed smoke blanketing the sky as firefighters fought the blaze. The smoke is travelling in a south to south-easterly direction.
