Kudus, 25, has been sidelined since suffering a “significant” quad injury in the 1-1 home draw with Sunderland in early January. He was initially slated to be out until after the March international break, with some optimism that he could return in time to feature in the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light in new head coach Roberto De Zerbi’s first game on Sunday. However, the club have confirmed following a setback, Kudus will now undergo “further specialist review and, potentially, surgery”. The Ghana international had returned to team training over the past week. De Zerbi, whose side could have slipped into the bottom three by the time they face Sunderland, is already without forwards Wilson Odobert and Dejan Kulusevski for the remainder of the season, while James Maddison is unlikely to feature significantly – if at all – this term as he works his way back from a cruciate ligament injury. Before his injury, Kudus had made 26 appearances for Spurs in all competitions, scoring three times, and was set to be a key part of Ghana’s World Cup campaign. They have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. Kudus joined Spurs in a summer deal from West Ham United worth around £55million ($74.7m). Spurs are one place above the relegation zone, having not won a league game since December. De Zerbi is their third head coach of the season and succeeds Igor Tudor, who was placed in charge until the end of the season following the sacking of Thomas Frank in February. Spot the pattern.
