Tonnes of waste cleared in 'river of rubbish' operation on Welsh mountain

Work has been carried out to clear a "mountain of rubbish" that was dumped on a beautiful Welsh mountain. Earlier this year locals were left disgusted by the sight of waste that had been dumped down the side of the Bwlch mountain near Treorchy in Rhondda Cynon Taf. It is not the first time such an act of fly-tipping has happened on the mountain. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has previously worked with the landowner to undertake "complex and costly" clean-ups at the beauty spot. On Saturday (May 30), council staff and mountain rescue teams were back at the mountain to clear up the site with the aid of specialist equipment. A spokesperson for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council said: "Work has been taking place today, to clear the notorious 'river of rubbish' from the Bwlch Mountain. "This complex operation has brought together Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team, using specialist equipment and rope systems to safely remove tonnes of waste that had been dumped, from the steep hillside. "As you can see this is not a small undertaking and huge thanks goes to the council team and Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team for their incredible efforts to restore this much-loved, renowned landscape. "In recognition of the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team team's extraordinary volunteer effort, they have set up a dedicated fundraising page for members of the public who wish to support the rescue team's vital work."
