Tiny field mouse is saved from fire by crews - before 'having a drink of water and running off to rejoin his friends'

Published: 01:23, 18 August 2026 | Updated: 01:25, 18 August 2026 A 'miraculous' tiny field mouse was saved by firefighters after they spotted it trying to navigate its way through the burning thicket. Crews were trying to put out a fire in Walton Grounds in Kings Sutton, Northamptonshire, on Thursday afternoon when they saw the small creature.  'Whilst we were attending some trees and hedgerows involved in fire, a member of our crew spotted this miraculous little field mouse scurrying amongst the smouldering undergrowth,' Towcester Fire Station posted on social media. The crew were able to locate the field mouse's companions, which it ran off to rejoin after being fed some water. 'After some searching, we located a family of mice in the hedgerow and were able to relocate them to a safe place after being checked over, it's safe to say this mouse was grateful for a drink of some of our water before running off to rejoin his friends,' the station, which works under Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, added. It is understood the fire was accidental and was caused by sunlight reflecting on broken glass. Key roads around the street and Stourbridge Golf Club remained closed on Sunday as West Midlands Police continues its investigation. Nineteen homes in the area, where houses average £1million, were destroyed, while 18 were left with fire damage, West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) confirmed. Devastating photos show homes reduced to hollow shells, with their roofs and windows completely obliterated. Network Rail workers were spotted examining the tracks after the fire scorched the railway embankments. WMFS started on Sunday to allow evacuated residents back into their homes for the first time since the blaze. Neighbour Neil Perry raced back from work 20 miles away to help farmers stop the fire from spreading. 'I feel sorry for the people who have lost their homes. It came over the field on Thursday and it was very quick. 'We were throwing water along the hedgerow to stop it. 'We could've lost our houses and the rest of the road, so we were quite lucky it didn't get the whole of Worcester Road. 'The quick-thinking and the bravery of people made all the difference. 'I raced back from work, I belted back because you could see the smoke 20 miles away. 'A lot of people did a lot of good - I knew a lady who saved horses. A lot of people did things they shouldn't be doing because of the fire, there were a lot of heroes.'
