The NHS is set to broaden its RSV vaccination programme from September, extending eligibility to adults between 65 and 74 years old who suffer from chronic respiratory ailments or compromised immune systems.

Those qualifying for the free jab include individuals managing conditions such as severe asthma, bronchitis, and cystic fibrosis, as well as patients whose immunity has been weakened by diabetes, blood disorders, or treatments including chemotherapy.

The expansion follows guidance from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, which identified these groups as facing heightened risks of severe illness from the virus.

Eligible individuals will be able to receive their vaccination through their local GP surgery or, in certain areas, at high street pharmacies.

Vaccination and virus

Respiratory syncytial virus represents a significant public health concern, sending approximately 14,000 people to hospital each year while claiming an estimated 8,000 lives annually.

The infection, which commonly affects the lungs, typically manifests as coughs and colds but can progress to pneumonia, bronchitis, and serious breathing difficulties in vulnerable individuals.

Although cases traditionally surge during colder months, health officials stress the threat persists throughout the year.

Caroline Temmink, Director of Vaccination at NHS England, said: "The virus poses a risk all year round, so if you've been offered the jab, please come forward to your GP or local pharmacy."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

She added: "RSV can make people seriously ill, which is why it's so important for those who are particularly vulnerable to be protected."

The vaccination programme has already demonstrated considerable success since its broader rollout earlier this year.

NHS England figures published today reveal more than half a million individuals aged 80 and above have received the jab over the past three months, with 519,571 vaccinations administered.

The initiative has also provided protection to some 300,000 mothers and their babies during its first year of availability to pregnant women, following the rollout in September 2024.

Perhaps most strikingly, evidence from last year showed the vaccine reduced RSV infections among infants by 72 per cent.

Millions of people aged 75 and over, along with care home residents, are already eligible for the vaccine, with those yet to receive it being urged to come forward without delay.

Public health minister Sharon Hodgson said: "By expanding the vaccination programme, we're making sure more people who are at higher risk are protected before they become seriously ill. This will save lives, prevent hundreds of avoidable hospital admissions and reduce pressure on the NHS during the winter months."

Dr Conall Watson, consultant epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency, said: "This is an important expansion of the RSV immunisation programme. New evidence makes it clear that these two groups of patients are at the highest risk of needing hospital admission due to RSV."

He added: "The vaccine gives excellent protection against severe lung infection, and I would encourage anyone eligible to take it up when offered. It could make a real difference to your health."
