At CinemaCon, asked about handing a large-scale gangster film to a woman director, he called it the most exciting part of the project. Action in India, he pointed out, has historically stayed a male director's genre, and this felt new. Elsewhere, he went further: it becomes fundamentally different coming from a female gaze, right down to how romance and desire are shown. Lovely idea in principle. Harder to carry on marketing. The promotional material leans hard on guns, swagger and sensual imagery, the grammar of male-dominated gangster cinema, which has left viewers asking whether the promised female gaze went missing behind an assertion of male power. Yash, notably, kept defending Geetu's vision through the backlash rather than distancing himself from it, which suggests the tension was never accidental. Whether the finished film backs that up is the real test. There's a more interesting story here than any box office prediction. Yash could have picked almost any commercial director after KGF. He picked Geetu Mohandas, and stayed on as producer and co-writer alongside her. Geetu has called their partnership "the collision of two worlds of thought," a more honest line than anything in the trailer. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, after watching the teaser, called her the ultimate symbol of women's empowerment in Indian cinema. If that collision works, it says something about Indian stardom: that a superstar's biggest asset is handing a distinctive filmmaker enough scale to challenge what his own audience expects of him. Kamal Haasan made that bet repeatedly and lost money on it. Hey Ram and Anbe Sivam were both reclaimed as classics only years after nearly bankrupting him at release. Hrithik, Shah Rukh and Prabhas paid smaller versions of the same price, each admitting afterwards that their audience simply wasn't ready to follow them there.advertisementThe honest truth It isn't fair to say Toxic has no identity. It's fairer to say the promotional material has created an identity problem, a different claim entirely, one the film itself could still disprove. Maybe the tug of war between KGF style masculinity and Geetu's sensibility isn't confusing at all. Maybe that's the point, and the trailer simply isn't built to carry that nuance. Either way, Toxic isn't fighting one audience. It's fighting Yash's own myth, the one KGF built so completely that any departure from it now reads as a risk. The box office will tell us who showed up.
