The Timothy Busfield case files: All the unseen texts, photos, drawings and audio evidence revealed for the first time... as Hollywood star faces disturbing charges

It was November 1, 2024, and the doctor had just examined two ten-year-old twin actors at the University of New Mexico’s pediatric urgent-care clinic when he called police to report concerns about possible grooming. The boys were part of the cast of the Fox crime drama The Cleaning Lady, where Emmy-winning actor Timothy Busfield served as executive producer and director. Busfield has since been charged with four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child under 13, with prosecutors alleging he molested the brothers on set. He has denied the charges.  The pediatrician told the operator that the boys’ parents had recently learned of previous allegations involving Busfield and had begun reassessing his interactions with their sons.  In audio obtained by the Daily Mail, the doctor told police: ‘The parents did report potential grooming behavior over the past two years with this coworker [Busfield], where he had been requesting that they call him “Uncle Tim.”  'He [Busfield] had been trying to get really close with them, hugging, tickling their stomach and chest, and then multiple incidences where he would do one-on-one script reading with them behind closed doors.' But the doctor also said that his exam found ‘no signs of any sexual misconduct’ and that neither boy had disclosed any misconduct directly to him.  An officer questioned the twins separately that evening. Both described hugs and tickling but denied being touched inappropriately. The initial investigation did not result in criminal charges and Busfield was apparently unaware of the concerns. The Daily Mail has reconstructed the case from hundreds of pages of newly obtained police reports, court filings and other evidence, including images from the set and a child’s sketch showing where the alleged abuse occurred.  Timothy Busfield with the twin actors he is accused of touching inappropriately. He has denied all wrongdoing  The concerns raised by the doctor came weeks after the twins were replaced in their role on The Cleaning Lady. Showrunner Daniel Cerone later said the twins had outgrown their role and lacked the acting range needed to continue. One twin re-auditioned but was not selected. Their parents would allege that Busfield had them removed from the show after they rejected his advances. But the case went quiet until February 2025, when two anonymous complaints about Busfield were submitted to a SAG-AFTRA hotline. One complaint alleged that Busfield kissed a child actor who had replaced the twins on the show in a hair-and-makeup trailer, drank heavily on set and appeared in photographs drunkenly tickling and caressing boys.  The second alleged that Busfield took one of the twins behind a closed office door during the September 2024 audition.  Neither complaint alleged sexual touching. SAG-AFTRA forwarded both to the studio behind the series, Warner Bros, which hired outside attorney Christina McGovern to investigate. Busfield would later testify before a New Mexico grand jury that he was ordered to leave the production while the allegations were reviewed, without initially being told what he was accused of doing. In audio of his testimony obtained by the Daily Mail, Busfield said he packed his belongings and began driving back to New York, conducting his interview with McGovern during a stop at a Chick-fil-A. For days, he said he had racked his brains, fearing what he could have done. ‘I thought I said the F-word to somebody,’ he told the grand jury. ‘I couldn’t figure out what I did.’ When he learned the complaint involved allegations of inappropriate contact with a child, Busfield claimed that his first reaction was relief. A document shows part of the set where one alleged incident of abuse is claimed to have taken place A separate document shows a stick-figure drawing one of the boys made to illustrate his account Challenged in court over why he felt ‘relieved’ to be accused of touching a young boy, Busfield said he was relieved because 'it was impossible’ and he knew he had not done it.  The twins’ allegations prompted detectives to revisit a 1993 accusation by a then-17-year-old extra who worked with Busfield on the 1994 movie Little Big League in Minnesota. She told Albuquerque police in 2026 that Busfield trapped her inside a production trailer, pinned her against a refrigerator and pressed his bare foot against her crotch while two people watched and laughed, according to court records obtained by the Daily Mail. Busfield has always denied her account, describing the resulting civil case as an attempt to extort millions of dollars. ‘I said it was false. I fought it to the end,’ he told the grand jury. The newly obtained records also contain other allegations from women who contacted Albuquerque police after the twins’ case became public. Among them is a former theater intern who accused Busfield of assaulting her, an actress who alleged that he attacked her in a trailer while filming the 1991 movie Strays and another actress who accused him of making graphic sexual remarks and following her to a gas station. None form part of the New Mexico charges. Busfield’s attorney, Larry Stein, questioned the credibility and relevance of the historic allegations and suggested prosecutors would struggle to introduce them at trial. ‘What evidentiary value would those allegations have to this case?’ Stein asked. ‘If he liked women 20 or 30 years ago, does that in any way add to the likelihood that he would be a pedophile with young boys now? And the answer is absolutely no.’ An image that purports to show Busfield interacting with one of the twins is included in the files Timothy Busfield is married to Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert McGovern’s investigation, completed on March 31, 2025, could not corroborate either of the anonymous SAG-AFTRA complaints. The parents of the actor who replaced the twins said they would have been present in the hair-and-makeup trailer and did not remember Busfield entering the room or kissing their son.  No witness knew of photographs showing him drunkenly caressing children, and nobody reported seeing him drink or appear intoxicated on set.  The allegation Busfield held a one-to-one audition with one of the twins was also disputed. Actress Elodie Yung - who played the show's lead character Thony De La Rosa - said she remained inside the conference room with Busfield and the boy during the audition. Warner Bros ultimately allowed Busfield to return to work. Yung later told McGovern that the twins’ mother had shown her a photograph of Busfield with the boys and suggested there was something inappropriate about it. Yung said she saw nothing troubling and found the insinuation so ‘weird’ that she distanced herself from the family - despite having once been close with them. The case changed again in July 2025 when Warner Bros received a draft civil complaint prepared on behalf of the twins that substantially expanded the allegations.  Busfield was arrested in January. He is best known for his role as Danny Concannon in Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing It accused Busfield of encouraging the boys to call him ‘Uncle Tim,’ treating them differently, inviting them to play with his dog and visit his home, isolating them from their parents, grooming their replacement and having them fired after they rejected his advances. Witnesses said they had seen no sexual or otherwise inappropriate conduct, but the inquiry remained incomplete because the twins and their parents were not made available for interviews. Yung also alleged to McGovern in the second investigative report that, during a dinner after the boys were dismissed, their mother said she did ‘not like’ what the decision had brought out of her but vowed to ‘get her revenge against Tim Busfield.’ In Daily Mail-obtained-text messages sent between Yung and the twins' mother in September 2024, the twins' mother shared her family's disappointment in her sons losing their role during a conversation with Yung. Yung responded by expressing sympathy over the recasting and describing acting as ‘a brutal business.' The case took another turn in September 2025, when one twin disclosed during therapy that Busfield allegedly had touched his crotch and buttocks over his clothing on set.  It was the first documented allegation of sexual contact and differed sharply from the twins' denials to police ten months earlier.  The boy's therapist noted that he appeared ashamed as he described the alleged contact and said he had been afraid to speak because he did not want to upset ‘Mr. Tim', files obtained by the Daily Mail show. Text messages reportedly between the twins' mom and actress Elodie Yung - who played their on-screen mother - show the family's disappointment at losing the role After the mother reported the disclosure to child-welfare authorities, both twins underwent forensic interviews on October 31. One twin alleged that Busfield came onto set after calling ‘cut,’ tickled him, grabbed his waist and touched his private areas over his clothing.  Investigative files include a photograph of where the abuse is alleged to have happened and a stick-figure drawing the boy made to illustrate his account.  His brother described unwanted contact but did not accuse Busfield of inappropriate touching, according to police records. Busfield has emphatically denied any sexual contact.   When detectives called him on November 3, with his wife, actress Melissa Gilbert, listening on speakerphone, he acknowledged that he may have tickled the boys.  A detective said Busfield described it as ‘highly likely’ that he had done so to energize them for a scene, although he later told the grand jury he had no specific recollection of it.  Any tickling or squeezing, Busfield said, most likely occurred while he was trying to make the boys smile for photographs. ‘Would I squeeze them like this? Come on, smile, smile. Would I do that? Yeah,’ he testified in recordings obtained by the Daily Mail. ‘Would I ever touch anywhere around a prepubescent child’s privates? No.’ He called the allegations ‘one gazillion percent untrue.' Other witnesses testified that the boys were always accompanied by a parent or studio teacher while on set. Director of photography Alan Caudillo also testified that Busfield could not have isolated either child without being seen by others. Caudillo described their father as an ‘aggressive’ and ‘alpha male’ figure who encouraged his sons to embrace senior crew members. ‘Give Mr. Alan a hug,’ he recalled the father saying - an instruction Caudillo said made him uncomfortable. Prosecutors argue that the alleged over-the-clothing contact could have happened in seconds before nearby crew members understood what had occurred.  Busfield was indicted in February on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child under 13, all involving one of the twins. His attorneys have asked a judge to quash the indictment, accusing prosecutors of presenting a distorted case and withholding evidence favorable to the defense. The defense also cited the parents’ financial history as a possible motive, citing the father’s prison sentence and disbarment for wire fraud and the mother’s civil judgments and disputed financial dealings.  Busfield and Gilbert's modest home in Highland Lake, NY, is pictured shortly after his arrest Busfield told the grand jury he believed the allegations were financially motivated, claiming the twins made $200,000 in their final season and their parents relied on their income.  But Busfield insisted he did not blame the twins. ‘Those poor kids should not be held in any way… responsible,’ he testified. ‘I do not believe they are acting on their own.’ Prosecutors argue that the parents’ histories do not determine whether their sons were abused. The defense points to newly obtained recordings of the twins’ first police interviews in November 2024, when both were questioned separately and expressly denied that Busfield had touched their private areas. ‘No, he’s never touched me,’ one said in audio obtained by the Daily Mail. Busfield’s lawyers also dispute that the later sexual-abuse disclosure was spontaneous.  Therapy notes read in court recorded the boy’s father telling his child to trust the therapist and speak about ‘the abuse’ so the family could heal. Only then, the defense argued, did he detail the allegation. Gilbert has fiercely defended her husband, declaring her absolute trust in his innocence after he was indicted They further challenged claims that his son was suffering trauma-related nightmares.  When his father was absent, the boy reportedly told the therapist that he woke because he was too hot or cold and not because of nightmares, according to grand jury testimony based on the child's therapist's notes. Asked why he hadn't corrected his father, he said he felt a need to please him and feared disappointing him. Prosecutors reject that interpretation, arguing that delayed disclosure is common among children, that the twins later gave consistent accounts to several professionals, noting no specialists reported concerns they had been coached.  Busfield was released in January on his own recognizance under strict pretrial conditions. His attorney, Larry Stein, said Busfield and his family have been destroyed by the allegations, emotionally and financially.  'Tim is never going to work again,' he said. '[But] Everyone knows and trusts him. He is the sweetest guy. Nobody believes he is a pedophile.' Busfield is scheduled to stand trial in May 2027.
