By VICTORIA CHURCHILL, US POLITICAL REPORTER Published: 21:03, 28 April 2026 | Updated: 21:28, 28 April 2026 Some Capitol Hill liberals attended Tuesday's speech by King Charles III despite previously pushing a 'No Kings' message in the US in opposition to President Donald Trump.  Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi beamed ahead of Tuesday's speech in a striking lilac suit as King Charles and Queen Camilla took the stage. Pelosi was also seen mingling with Republicans on the other side of the House chamber in a friendly manner before the address.  Pelosi was also named by current House Speaker Mike Johnson as an official escort to bring the King into the House as Tuesday's address commenced. Last month, Pelosi argued in a video posted to Facebook that 'NO KINGS - that was the WHOLE POINT of the American Revolution and our Constitution.' Wearing a nearly identical shade of lilac to Pelosi on Tuesday was fellow 'No Kings' rallier, New Jersey Democrat LaMonica McIver. Although in attendance at Tuesday's speech, McIver did not stand during several instances of the King's speech when most of her colleagues did, including one mention of a joint commitment to national security between the UK and the US. McIver took her outfit on Tuesday much more seriously, as opposed to when she wore a grey set of a sweatshirt and sweatpants to attend and speak at a 'No Kings' rally in her home state in June of 2025. She appeared at that event alongside Representative Robert Menendez and Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka. Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar was present at Tuesday's address as well, despite her previous 'No Kings' speeches. Omar also appeared to be much more respectful of King Charles III than of her own President Donald Trump during his State of the Union speech in the same room mere months ago. Omar vocally protested during Trump's address during the last joint session of Congress on February 24th of this year. Representative Nancy Mace asked 'What happened to "No Kings?"' in response to a photograph of Omar posted on X. Representative and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, arrives before Britain's King Charles III speaks to a joint meeting of Congress in the House Chamber at the US Capitol, Tuesday, April 28, 2026, in Washington Representative Nancy Pelosi seen in a screen grab of a No Kings video posted to her Facebook Account on March 28, 2026 US Representative Ilhan Omar, Democrat from Minnesota, waits for the arrival of Britain's King Charles III during a Joint Meeting of Congress in the House Chamber at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on April 28, 2026 Congresswoman Ilhan Omar speaks onstage as Hundreds of Thousands Protest as part of the No Kings Rallies on March 28, 2026 in St. Paul, Minnesota Ilhan Omar shouts at President Donald J. McIver attended Tuesday's Joint Address by King Charles at the US Capitol The White House chimed in on the 'No Kings' rhetoric, seemingly trolling the Democrats, posting a photograph of Trump and the King with the caption 'TWO KINGS.' Although widely attended, Tuesday's speech did appear less packed than other joint addresses, including Trump's February State of the Union. One Republican who skipped out was Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert, who wrote 'Welcome, your Majesty, to the land of No Kings,' adorned with an American flag in a post on X about an hour before the King's address on Tuesday.  Scores of liberal activists have gathered on at least 3 occasions for 'No Kings' protests against President Donald Trump and his administration's actions that they view as illegal and subverting American Democracy. Members of Congress have been among those both encouraging and attending demonstrations.  Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, of New York, posted on X ahead of a 'No Kings' day last year to 'encourage Americans everywhere, Americans who love this country, who care about our democracy, to march peacefully.' 'I say to my fellow citizens: do not let Donald Trump and Republicans intimidate you into silence,' Schumer added. 'That's what they want to do. They're afraid of the truth.' Republicans like House Speaker Mike Johnson have decried the 'No Kings' events, saying they are likely to include 'Hamas supporters' and 'antifa types.'  A 'No Kings' protest scheduled in New York City has dozens of sponsors, including the 'Communist Party USA.' The description for one of the demonstrations urges attendees to commit 'to nonviolent action.' 'We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events,' organizers noted. Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Chicago's Daley Plaza for a 'No Kings' demonstration on June 14 Demonstrators turned out to protest against Trump in Charlotte, North Carolina on June 14  President Donald Trump has refuted the premise of the protests, telling Fox News last year ', 'I am not a king.'  Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott planned to send National Guard troops and other law enforcement to Austin for its demonstration, which earned him blowback from Democrats last year. 'No Kings' events held in 2025 occurred in over 2,600 locations across all 50 states.  The demonstration in Washington, DC, drew one of the largest crowds, but gatherings in other major liberal cities were sizable as well. The first round of 'No Kings' protests took place on June 14, 2025, the day of Trump's military parade in Washington, DC,  last year, which also coincided with his 79th birthday. Some demonstrations across the country turned chaotic, including an incident in Culpeper, Virginia, in which a man drove into a crowd at a gathering.  On the National Mall in Washington, DC, there were only a smattering of critics - some quietly holding signs, with others more loudly heckling the president's MAGA fans who gathered for the military parade.
