If you had plans to take a dip in London’s first official bathing site this summer, think again.

Swimmers have been warned against swimming in the water in Kingston upon Thames due to pollution from toxic algae.

The caution was issued by the Environment Agency, which has also told locals to avoid going into the water along a broader stretch of the river that is likely to have been hit by the algae.

It added that it is ‘vitally important’ to keep dogs away, too.

The blue-green algae can produce toxins that are harmful to human and animal health.

Cyanobacteria (plant-like organisms that live in water) can quickly grow out of control. It tends to bloom when warm temperatures, low rainfall, and calmer water conditions create ideal growing conditions.

Some of these blooms produce toxins that can kill wild animals, farm animals, and pets and can also harm people, causing skin rashes and illness if swallowed.

As per the Environment Agency, during drought and prolonged dry weather, it has reported increasing numbers of algal blooms, fish deaths, and deteriorating water quality.

Currently, around three-quarters of England is in drought following five heatwaves and temperatures that exceeded 38.1C.

A spokesperson said: ‘We have identified blue-green algae on the lower River Thames, including the Ham and Kingston designated bathing water.

‘We are working with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, who have put signage in this location to warn people that it is not safe to swim.

‘An advice against bathing notice has been activated on the Swiminfo website.’

People in the water at The Thames at Ham, which was recently designated as London's first official river bathing water site on the River Thames. This was after campaigners gathered evidence to show thousands of people use the river for swimming throughout the year at the site. The fourth heatwave of the year is set to peak on Wednesday with temperatures of up to 35C, as experts warn wildfires could be ???exceptionally severe???. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber heat-health alert for the East Midlands, the East, South East and London.Picture date: Wednesday July 29, 2026. PA Photo. They also warned that it was likely the section of the River Thames between Hampton and Kingston had also been affected.

‘It is important that members of the public do not enter the Thames along this stretch. It is also vitally important to keep dogs out of the water,’ the spokesperson urged.

The Environment Agency is taking water samples along the stretch of river to confirm the extent of the algal bloom.

Abstractors downstream and the UK Health Security Agency have been notified.

The Ham and Kingston bathing site opened in May in the latest tranche of new spots for open-water swimming.

It became the first designated bathing water on the river in London and is subject to regular water tests during the summer season until the end of September.
