Student police officer, 23, allegedly 'bundled' woman into his car and raped her before 'driving off at 125mph' with her inside, court told

Mohammad Hassan, 23, was arrested on the M62 motorway in West Yorkshire on Saturday after a police pursuit which followed a 999 call from the Manchester area. A woman who could allegedly be heard in distress in the VW Golf during the call was 'safeguarded at the scene', police say.  Today Hassan appeared in court charged with offences including rape, kidnap, strangulation, sexual assault, theft of a mobile phone and dangerous driving.  Outlining the case, prosecutor Ewan Cooper said Hassan – who was off-duty at the time – had waited for the woman to finish work. He allegedly got out of his car, 'placed his arm around her neck' and 'bundled' her inside, Stockport Magistrates' Court heard. He then drove to an area of Manchester where he allegedly sexually assaulted and raped her before driving off at 125mph, Mr Cooper said. A 999 call was made shortly before 10.20pm. Hassan, of Failsworth, Oldham, who was dressed in a grey tracksuit top and bottoms, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. District Judge James Hulse remanded Hassan in custody and he will next appear at Manchester Crown Court on September 15. Hassan, who has been suspended by Greater Manchester Police, is described by the force as being of Asian-Pakistani ethnicity. The alleged victim, who is in her twenties, is being supported by specialist officers and support services. On Monday, Assistant Chief Constable Mark Dexter said: 'GMP detectives and staff have been working on this investigation throughout the last 48 hours to ensure charges are brought in this case. 'The victim is our priority, and we are ensuring she continues to receive specialist support.  'Criminal proceedings must now take its course without interference. 'I understand, and share, the feeling among the public and our thousands of hard-working, decent staff who will have seen this news.  'Proceedings are underway and necessary action will be decisively taken within the regulations.' Before charges were laid, he said: 'This is quite clearly a deeply concerning and disturbing incident that we are fully investigating with specialist resources to ensure the victim receives support and justice. 'I can give our full commitment to working with the Crown Prosecution Service to bring this case to court as quickly as possible, as well as accelerating the necessary misconduct proceedings within the regulations. 'Thousands of the men and women in GMP work every day to protect the public. I know they, like me, will be shocked and angered by this news. 'All necessary and decisive action will be taken in the interest of the victim and the public.' The matter has also been referred by GMP to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
