‘Shameful’ World Cup Proposal Sparks Outrage in Italy After Rejection
Rabat – A controversial proposal tied to US President Donald Trump suggesting that Italy could replace Iran at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup has triggered strong reactions across Italian political and sporting circles.
Senior figures described the idea as “shameful,” “inappropriate,” and fundamentally against the principles of sport.
Proposal dismissed as unrealistic and “offensive”
The idea, first reported by the Financial Times, suggested that a US envoy had floated the possibility of Italy taking Iran’s place in the tournament, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Italy’s Minister for Sport, Andrea Abodi, rejected the notion outright in remarks to the Italian news agency LaPresse, stating that such a scenario is both “impossible” and “inappropriate,” emphasizing that World Cup qualification must be earned on the pitch.
Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti went further, labeling the proposal “shameful,” while Luciano Buonfiglio, president of the Italian National Olympic Committee, also dismissed the suggestion. “I’d be offended. You have to deserve it to go to the World Cup,” Buonfiglio said.
Sporting figures stress meritocracy
Italian coach Gianni De Biasi also dismissed the proposal as unrealistic in comments to Reuters, noting that if any team were to withdraw, the replacement should logically come from the qualification pathway.
“Italy does not need help from Trump,” he said, reinforcing the sentiment that qualification must remain merit-based.
Similarly, David Aganzo, head of Spain’s footballers’ association and former international players’ union president, stressed that all teams must earn their place through sporting results, although he acknowledged that broader political dynamics may be at play.
‘Keep politics out of football’
FIFA has not entertained the proposal, instead referring to recent remarks by its president Gianni Infantino, who confirmed that Iran is expected to participate.
“Sport must remain separate from politics,” Infantino said, underlining FIFA’s long-standing position on political neutrality.
Origins of the controversy
According to the Financial Times, the suggestion came from Paolo Zampolli, a businessman and special envoy linked to Trump, who reportedly proposed the idea as part of broader diplomatic considerations, including improving relations with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Zampolli reportedly described the idea as a “dream,” citing Italy’s historic record of four World Cup titles. However, the proposal has gained little traction in Italy, where major sports outlets treated it as marginal.
Italy’s absence and Iran’s confirmation
Italy’s national football team failed to qualify for the 2026 tournament after a playoff defeat, marking a third consecutive World Cup absence, an unprecedented slump for the four-time champions.
Meanwhile, Iranian football authorities, led by Mehdi Taj, have reaffirmed their intention to participate, despite geopolitical tensions. Preparations are reportedly underway, including planned warm-up matches abroad.
A controversy with little sporting credibility
Despite the political noise, the proposal appears to lack any practical pathway within FIFA regulations. Across Italy, the reaction has been largely unified: participation in the World Cup must be decided by results on the field, not diplomatic maneuvering.
