Vaughn Ridley / Getty Images Share articlePHOENIX — In the latest hit to the Toronto Blue Jays’ scuffling and injury-depleted lineup, outfielder Daulton Varsho was removed in the third inning of Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks due to left knee discomfort. With four key bats already on the injured list, losing Varsho for any extended time would be a massive loss for the Jays. Varsho swung at two pitches in his first-inning at-bat, showing no signs of discomfort after either. He played two balls in the bottom of the second, corralling a line drive and fielding a single. Those defensive plays were his last before leaving Friday’s contest. UPDATE: OF Daulton Varsho was removed from tonight's game with left knee discomfort. — Toronto Blue Jays (@BlueJays) April 18, 2026 The Jays, who lost Anthony Santander to shoulder surgery ahead of spring training, have since placed George Springer (toe), Addison Barger (ankles) and Alejandro Kirk (thumb) on the IL. Barger and Springer won’t likely be out long term but are still at least a week away from rejoining the club. By Steamer wRC+ projections, Springer, Kirk and Barger represented three of Toronto’s five best offensive players. Varsho, who shifted to the second spot in Toronto’s lineup after the injuries, has been one of the team’s few performing players lately. In his last six games before Friday’s contest, the outfielder hit three homers with a 1.215 OPS. For a Jays team that hasn’t won a series since opening weekend and continues to lose players to injury, a lengthy Varsho absence would be crushing. Myles Straw, who filled in for Varsho often last year, could factor into the lineup, but no Jay can bring the combination of power and defence that Varsho provides. Mainly, though, the Jays can’t afford to lose many more players. Spot the pattern.
