A French court has found two passengers guilty of causing major disruption aboard a Ryanair service bound for Ibiza last May, handing down suspended prison terms of up to ten months alongside combined financial penalties surpassing €10,000 (£8,645).

The Toulouse Criminal Court delivered its verdict yesterday following the incident on Flight FR9251, which departed London Stansted Airport on May 17, 2025.

The pair's conduct forced the aircraft to make an unscheduled landing in Toulouse, cutting short the journey for fellow travellers heading to the Spanish island.

Ryanair has expressed satisfaction with the court's decision, describing it as a demonstration of consequences facing troublesome flyers.

During the flight, the two individuals directed abuse at other passengers and refused to comply with instructions from cabin crew.

Their behaviour left the airline with no option but to reroute the aircraft to the French city, disrupting travel plans for more than 184 people on board along with six crew members.

Many of those affected were reportedly families and groups of friends embarking on summer holidays to the popular Balearic destination.

The diversion meant passengers faced significant delays and reduced time at their intended destination, with the incident highlighting the wider impact that a small number of disruptive travellers can have on fellow flyers.

Ryanair's Jade Kirwan said: "We welcome this decision by the Toulouse Criminal Court to convict these two disruptive passengers and sentence them with up to 10 months jail time and to pay a penalty of over €10,000."

She added it was "unacceptable" for holidaymakers to suffer disruption caused by unruly behaviour.

The airline reiterated its commitment to maintaining a comfortable environment for the overwhelming majority of well-behaved passengers.

A company spokesman emphasised Ryanair operates a strict zero-tolerance approach to misconduct and will pursue action against those who cause problems in the air.

Michael O'Leary

Michael O'Leary, the airline's chief executive, recently revealed Ryanair experiences nearly one diversion every day due to passenger misconduct, which is a stark rise from approximately once per week a decade ago.

Speaking to The Times, he described the situation as "a real challenge for all airlines" and questioned the logic of airport bars serving alcohol in the early hours.

"I fail to understand why anybody in airport bars is serving people at five or six o'clock in the morning. Who needs to be drinking beer at that time?" Mr O'Leary said.

Mr O'Leary this week advocated for restrictions on pre-flight drinking before morning departures.
