A Russian attempt to execute an American citizen in Poland has been foiled at the "last minute".
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced his country had arrested a Russian who allegedly planned to kill a man in Warsaw.
"Thanks to the truly brilliant action of our services... We detained a Russian citizen recruited by Russian intelligence services," Mr Tusk said.
"At the last minute, thanks to the action of the Internal Security Agency and the police, we managed to prevent this execution, this attack," he added.
The Polish leader described the alleged target as a man who was "inconvenient to the Putin regime".
He held both American and Ukrainian passports.
Mr Tusk said this marked the first time someone had been hired by Moscow to attack an American citizen inside another Nato country.
In June, a Russian artist critical of President Vladimir Putin was shot and killed in an eastern Polish town, prosecutors said.
This is not the first time an alleged assassination attempt has been thwarted inside the Nato alliance, however.
Last year, French officials said they disrupted a plan aimed at killing Vladimir Osechkin, a Russian exile currently under police protection.
A Russian exile later died in Paris after a mysterious fall from a seventh-floor window.
In 2018, the Salisbury poisonings in the UK made worldwide headlines, as two men, who went by Ruslan Boshirov and Alexander Petrov, allegedly attempted to poison Sergei Skripal and daughter Yulia.
It was later revealed Ruslan Boshirov and Alexander Petrov were aliases - their real names were Alexander Mishkin and Anatoliy Chepiga, respectively.
The two men claimed they were in Britain as tourists to see the "famous 123-metre spire" of Salisbury Cathedral.
The Kremlin maintains it had nothing to do with the assassination.

Officials in Germany have also prevented two plots - one to target the head of a German weapons company supplying Ukraine, and the other against a Ukrainian military official.
Senior Nato officials have previously warned of a mass campaign of sabotage across the West.
While GB News has exposed what some call a destabilisation campaign where migrants are sent through tunnels into Poland and Lithuania.
And right now, Russia's northern Nato neighbours are tightening their security around dams, power plants and natural gas infrastructure in a sign of mounting concern that Moscow will stage a "false flag" attack on them using Ukrainian drones.
Lithuania said last week that Moscow is considering such a staged attack.
Poland, Latvia and Estonia have also all warned of acts of sabotage to test Nato's response while the US is urging Europe to be more self-sufficient.
Kremlin spin doctor Dmitry Peskov last month claimed warnings of underhand Russian attacks were "scare stories" used to justify attacks on Russia.
But Lithuania has hit back.
Its defence minister Robertas Kaunas warned: "We are not naive, we see the information, we read between the lines and we are doing our homework.
"We are increasing the security of our critical infrastructure, we constantly exchange information with our intelligence on what to do next."
Last month, the nation dispatched its military to back up riot police in securing three different oil terminals and power plants.
Latvia has increased security around all its critical infrastructure, a dam and an underground gas storage facility.
