Rory McIlroy's prospects of claiming £2.65million at next week's Truist Championship have received a significant boost following Scottie Scheffler's decision to skip the event.

The world number one has opted to withdraw from the PGA Tour Signature Event at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina, choosing instead to concentrate on defending his PGA Championship crown the following week.

Scheffler's absence opens the door for the 36-year-old Northern Irishman to secure an unprecedented fifth victory at the venue.

McIlroy, who holds six major titles, enters the tournament as the reigning back-to-back Masters champion after his historic triumph last month.

The Northern Irishman boasts an exceptional record at the North Carolina course, having previously lifted the trophy on four occasions in 2010, 2015, 2021 and 2024.

During those victories, the competition was known as the Wells Fargo Championship before its rebranding.

The substantial winner's cheque of $3.6million is a figure McIlroy has grown accustomed to throughout his decorated career.

This week's tournament represents his first competitive appearance since joining an elite group of golfers by winning consecutive Masters titles.

Five quirky facts about golf

Only Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods had previously achieved back-to-back victories at Augusta National before McIlroy's remarkable feat last month.

Despite Scheffler's withdrawal, the Truist Championship will still feature a formidable field with nearly all of the world's elite players in attendance.

The majority of golfers ranked in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings have confirmed their participation, with Russell Henley, currently positioned eighth globally, being the only other notable absentee alongside Scheffler.

The world number one's decision to bypass the event stems from his determination to retain the PGA Championship title he captured last year.

Scottie Scheffler

The second major of the season takes place just seven days after the conclusion of the Truist Championship, prompting Scheffler to prioritise his preparation.

McIlroy has spoken openly about his strategic approach to the latter stages of his career, explaining his focus on golf's biggest occasions.

"I'm at a point in my career where I really have to target the bigger events, the four Major championships, the Ryder Cup. Trying to add to that number is something that's really important to me," he said at the Laureus World Sports Awards.

The Northern Irishman revealed he draws motivation from sporting icons including Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Tom Brady.

Currently tied on six majors with Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson and Nick Faldo, victory at the upcoming PGA Championship would see McIlroy stand alone.
