المصدر: GB News | Source: GB NewsRory McIlroy will avoid punishment for missing the PGA Tour members' requirement of featuring in 15 events through a loophole in the criteria.
The Masters Champion may play in only 14 events this season, which would affect his status for 2027.
However, due to an exception in the PGA Tour's Tournament Regulations, the Northern Irishman is allowed to feature in just 12 tournaments to retain his membership.
The details read: "The Commissioner, upon application by a foreign member and for medical reasons or other extraordinary circumstances that the Commissioner, at his discretion, determines to be a valid reason for not playing in at least 15 PGA Tour cosponsored or approved tournaments, may reduce the 15-minimum (or 12-minimum as the case may be) tournament requirement."
TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayIt continues: "A foreign PGA Tour member shall be eligible for a 'home circuit' exception to provisions of the release regulations with regard to conflicting tournaments provided he has played, or committed to play, in a minimum of 15 PGA Tour cosponsored or approved tournaments in the season.
"Or in the case of a Regular Member or Life Member who is age 45 or more and has made 150 cuts or more in tournaments awarding official prize money in his career, in a minimum of 12 PGA Tour cosponsored or approved tournaments in the season."
To note, the PGA Tour removed the age or number of seasons as a requirement to become a life member, with McIlroy listed as both a foreign PGA Tour member and a life PGA Tour member.
A player only needs to reach 20 wins to be eligible for life membership, which McIlroy became at the beginning of the 2022/23 season.
McIlroy was on course to fulfil the minimum of 15 events without needing the exemption from the commissioner by playing in the Travelers Championship this week.
The Northern Irishman instead has opted to spend his time at Royal Birkdale ahead of the Open Championship.
McIlroy ran into Sir Nick Faldo at the golf club in Southport, giving his thoughts ahead of the final major of the year.
He said: "I've always thought Birkdale is one of the best on the Open rota, so excited to be back.

"It's good. A little bit different from 2017, the last time we played an Open here. Some different green complexes, different holes.
"The fifth hole I just played is completely different. I like it. A good drivable par four. A bit of a penalty if you get it and miss.
"I don't know if the water is quite in play on the right but a lot of big deep bunkers guarding the green."
McIlroy will play in the Genesis Scottish Open, which he won in 2023 and finished runner-up last year.
He continued to Faldo: "I am going to play the Scottish Open, so it will be nice to get a few reps in, get a card in my hand, do all that.
"It's good to get up here and play early. I've been trying to do that at every major championship, which is working out for me.
"Try to play a bit of links golf, get used to these conditions again."
