The 74-year-old’s departure comes after he expressed frustration with Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. Ranieri had been appointed Roma coach for the third time in November 2024 with the club 16th in Serie A but helped them finish one point from Champions League qualification in fifth. He was then offered the chance to take the Italy head coach role, which would have been a 25th job of his career, but instead stayed at Roma in an executive position above his successor in the dugout, Gasperini. After Roma’s victory over Pisa on April 10, Ranieri addressed Gasperini’s criticism of sporting director Ricky Massara, Roma’s transfer business and the club’s medical staff. “We drew up a list of five or six coaches (to replace me),” Ranieri said. “Three didn’t come and the club chose Gasperini. We chose him on the back of the job he did with Atalanta, where he started out with kids and took them to the big stage. We signed kids and I say ‘we’ because we chose them together, Gasperini included. There isn’t a player we signed he didn’t know about and didn’t approve.” Who saw this beef at Roma coming? 👀🇮🇹@JamesHorncastle on the rising tensions between head coach Gian Piero Gasperini and former-coach-turned-advisor Claudio Ranieri… pic.twitter.com/V8uilVRC8Z — The Totally Football Show (@TheTotallyShow) April 17, 2026 A Roma club statement on Friday read: “The club would like to thank Claudio for his significant contributions to Roma. He led the team through a very challenging time and we will always be grateful for his efforts. “As we look to the future, our direction is clear. The club is strong, with solid leadership and a defined vision. Roma will always come first. “We have full confidence in the path ahead under Gian Piero Gasperini, with the shared objective of growing, improving, and delivering results worthy of our history.” The Club's statement on Claudio Ranieri 📄 https://t.co/xYzrqClcN9 #ASRoma pic.twitter.com/vctOQXiSK6 — AS Roma English (@ASRomaEN) April 24, 2026 The Italian is most well-known for leading Leicester City to their against-the-odds Premier League title in the 2015-16 season, while he also won the Coppa Italia, Copa del Rey and UEFA Super Cup during his time in management. Roma are sixth in Serie A, level on points with fifth-place Como and five points behind Juventus in fourth. They were knocked out of the Europa League in the round-of-16 in March by Bologna.
