Prince William meets the unsung heroes of England's success
Prince William visited England's national football centre at St. George's Park to express his appreciation to the behind-the-scenes staff preparing for the upcoming World Cup in the United States.
The FA Patron spent time with the extensive support network responsible for ensuring Thomas Tuchel's squad is ready for the tournament, which kicks off for England against Croatia in Dallas on June 17.
During his visit, the prince made clear his purpose was to recognise those who often go unnoticed.
He said: "I just wanted to take the opportunity to see the team behind the team today, and to say thank you and good luck to all of you guys who don't get as much acknowledgement or credit as you deserve."
The prince engaged with a diverse array of specialists whose work underpins England's tournament preparations.
This included coaching staff and performance analysts who shape tactical approaches, alongside medical professionals, nutritionists and sports science experts tasked with maintaining player health and optimising recovery.
Beyond the technical teams, Prince William also spent time with personnel handling the intricate operational demands of international football.
These staff members oversee travel arrangements, security protocols, media relations and player welfare services.
The kit and facilities teams were also among those who met the Prince during his visit to the Burton-upon-Trent complex.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel reflected on how the support structure has expanded considerably over time.
The England manager said: "It gets bigger and bigger, the team behind the team. So many specialists, from nutritionists to analysts and the set-pieces."
Prince William emphasised the collective effort required to support the national team at a major tournament.
"It's a big team that gets on that plane. It's a big team that looks after them. Not everyone gets to see the hard work you put in, and the success of the players comes from the foundations you built, so thank you."
The royal also acknowledged the scale of the challenge awaiting England in North America.
He said: "It's not going to be an easy tournament as you well know. It's going to be one of the hardest World Cups there's probably been in the modern era, but I have no doubt you'll rise to the occasion and deliver on all the things that you do so brilliantly."
England's 26-man squad was confirmed last Friday via the official England app, with the full contingent of players and staff set to assemble in Florida next Monday.
Before facing Croatia in their tournament opener, Tuchel's side will play two preparatory fixtures on American soil. The Three Lions meet New Zealand in Tampa on 6 June before taking on Costa Rica in Orlando four days later.
The visit also marked a personal milestone for Prince William. Staff presented him with a commemorative shirt featuring the number 20, celebrating two decades since he assumed the role of FA President this month.
The tournament represents the culmination of months of meticulous planning by the extensive backroom operation.
