‘Political nous of a broom handle!’ Keir Starmer's 'embarrassing’ gamble to cling to power savaged by ex-Attorney General

Keir Starmer’s attempts to cling to power have been branded as “embarrassing” by Sir Michael Ellis.

Speaking to GB News, the former Conservative Attorney General described the Prime Minister as possessing “the political nous of a broom handle” in his devastating verdict.

At least 78 Labour MPs have called for Sir Keir to step down, with Cabinet Ministers also said to be demanding a resignation roadmap.

A crunch cabinet meeting was convened this morning, where the Prime Minister declared he would not quit.

Sir Keir declared: “The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader, and that has not been triggered.”

“The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a Cabinet.”

It followed a major speech on Monday aimed at reinvigorating support for his place in Downing Street after Labour’s disastrous local election losses.

“Keir Starmer's speech yesterday, where he was going to reset everything, was literally embarrassing because it was the same old thing,” Sir Michael savaged.

“There was nothing bold about it at all,” he declared.

“It was as though he were talking to a Labour Party group and not to the general public.

“His inability to function outside of the political bubble is incredibly damaging,” the former Tory Attorney General said.

“I watched this speech with amazement because I thought: ‘You don't get it. If that's the best you've got. That is not going to save your premiership’.”

“The truth is, he has the political nous of a broom handle,” Sir Michael slammed.

“There is absolutely no political antennae there at all.

“It's not a left or right thing. You have to understand where people are thinking and how they operate.

“Taking your jacket and tie off and making a speech to Labour friends is not going to change the weather when the situation is a full crisis, as it is now,” the former Conservative Attorney General said.

Meanwhile, GB News’s Katherine Forster spoke to Labour Minister Baroness Chapman following this morning’s crunch Cabinet meeting.

The staunch ally of Sir Keir’s insisted he was “doing a very good job”, adding: “He is leading the Cabinet this morning. He's making decisions about the country.

“He's putting the people of the country first and not the psychodrama that we could take the opportunity to indulge in.

“We will stop the chaos. We will,” the Labour peer pledged.
