The Pittsburgh Steelers traded up to pick Alabama wide receiver Germie Bernard with the No. 47 pick in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He was the eighth receiver drafted. The Steelers sent pick Nos. 53, 135 and 237 to the Indianapolis Colts to move up six spots and take Bernard. Pittsburgh also received the 249th pick in the seventh round as part of the deal. Bernard was a four-star recruit from Las Vegas who started his college career at Michigan State before flourishing as a transfer under head coach Kalen DeBoer in two places. At Washington in 2023, he caught 34 passes for 419 yards while also contributing on special teams. After following DeBoer to Alabama, Bernard emerged as the Crimson Tide’s leading receiver both years (totaling 114 receptions for 1,656 yards). Last season, his seven touchdown catches tied for fifth in the SEC. Among his highlights: a touchdown to kickstart the 24-21 win over Georgia that snapped the Bulldogs’ six-year home winning streak. At 6 feet 1 and 206 pounds with a 4.48-second 40, Bernard isn’t the biggest or fastest receiver in the draft. He has also been easy to overlook on rosters loaded with receiving talent (Keon Coleman at Michigan State, Rome Odunze at Washington, Ryan Williams at Alabama). But he’s steady, reliable and versatile. Bernard was credited with forcing 17 missed tackles last season, and he also rushed for five touchdowns over the past three years. Bernard ranked No. 41 in Dane Brugler’s top 300 big board. Here’s what Brugler had to say about him in his annual NFL Draft guide: “At the risk of sounding obtuse, Bernard is just a good football player. He is a good-sized athlete who can gear up and down with ease and plays just as comfortably along the sideline as when attacking the middle of the field. It will be more challenging for him to create separation versus NFL corners, but he is a natural at addressing the football and competes with the toughness to play through contact.” Just a good football player, with a well-rounded, pro-ready skill set.
