A Piddington resident has pleaded with the Prime Minister to reconsider the planned asylum accommodation in their community after the local children sent letters directly to Downing Street.

Speaking to GB News, Samantha Phillips asked Andy Burnham to think "as a parent and as a father" about the impact that moving in 1,250 illegal migrants will have on their town.

Taking action alongside their parents, several of Piddington's children have written to Mr Burnham to ask him to U-turn on the decision.

One child, seven-year-old Rex Perkin, wrote: "Dear Andy, We like our village because I and my family walk down to my sister’s grave to see her.

"I worry I won’t be able to do that anymore. My family has lived here for over 100 years. I love the playing field in Piddington because I (go) there every week. Thanks Andy."

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Orla West warned the PM: "I do not like this idea because we love our park. We can walk our dogs. We love Piddington."

Discussing the letters, Ms Phillips told GB News that she hopes the children's voices will "resonate" with him as a parent.

She said: "The purpose of the letters is the Prime Minister has one of the most important jobs in the world, and that is as a father and a parent. And I hope the children's voices will resonate with him as a father.

"And as one parent to another, I would like him to reflect on his own kids childhoods. I know he has three children that have grown up now, but think about all their great family times that they had together, the freedoms they enjoyed, they had open spaces, they played without fear.

"Their kids were allowed to reach all their developmental milestones through open and free play. So really, it's an appeal to him as a father."

Ms Phillips said that the main concern amongst locals is their safety, as they have "not been consulted" on any plans for extra security.

She explained: "The issue is safety. They're going to be allowed to roam freely. There's been no talk of any form of security for us as a village and a community. I understand the garrison next door, nine months ago were told that they would get extra security. They're military personnel, so why would they need it?

The children penned their letters to Andy Burnham today

"We've not been consulted on anything about security. Naturally, we have fears because these are single adult males. We know there isn't robust vetting, they arrive with no documentation, we don't know who they are, what their intentions are, and I'm pretty sure the Home Office don't either.

"So naturally, we are going to be outnumbered, and 65 per cent of the village are women and children, that is a huge concern and that is going to curb our freedom. We are not going to want to go out, and I'm not going to want to walk my dog up here anymore."

Ms Phillips stressed that this is more than a case of "stranger danger" for the children as it is going to be "1,250 strangers" in a town with less than 400 people in.

She concluded: "We have nothing here other than a play field. We have no pub, no shop, we have no pavements, no street lighting, no police force, a rural crime unit that are really stretched. They're not just covering Piddington.

"So there may be security on site, yes they can sign in and sign out, but they don't know where they are during the day and what they're doing."

In a statement, a Home Office spokesman said: "We are closing every asylum hotel and moving asylum seekers into basic accommodation including ex-military sites.

"This is an important step in ending the perception you can arrive illegally and be put up in a hotel.

"The population of asylum seekers in hotels has fallen by 35 per cent in the last year and by 63 per cent from the peak under the previous government. Overall asylum costs have already fallen by nearly £1billion since this government was elected."
