A Piddington resident has told GB News that the idea of over 1,000 asylum seekers being moved into the community "scares the life out of her".

Speaking to reporter Dougie Beattie, Paula Ewers expressed her concern for the safety of herself and her four children, as she "walks everywhere".

The leafy village near Bicester, Oxfordshire currently holds a population of just 350 people.

The proposed site, according to residents, has "no infrastructure, electricity or water supply", and will cost "millions" to make it liveable for the asylum seekers.

Discussing the site, Ms Ewers told GB News that the site has "never had a barracks", and has only been "used for storage".

She said: "It's not a barracks, it was for storage. There isn't any infrastructure, none. It's not suitable for them."

Fearing for the safety of her children, Ms Ewers declared she will "no longer be able to walk with her children", despite it being her only mode of transport.

She told GB News: "I've got four children, three who are young and I don't drive, so I walk about everywhere.

"So when they're being bussed in to Bicester, they'll be free to roam wherever and do what they want.

"And I've seen obviously online everywhere else how they behave, so it scares the life out of me, to the point where I probably won't walk about with my children anymore."

Ms Ewers stressed that they have attempted to voice their opposition to the site being used to house asylum seekers through their local MP and local council.

She said: "Nobody really knows when it's going to happen, what's going to happen, they've said it's going to happen here and that's that.

"We can't really do anything about it, so we're just fighting and getting our voices heard that we don't want it."

Residents of the village have organised a "protest picnic" in the local recreation ground, to express their joint concern for the site being used.

Ms Ewers told GB News of the protest: "We're protesting to obviously show the support we've got around the area that we don't want it.

"We have online petitions, we've got a petition that we're going to take to 10 Downing Street, we're going to try and get legal help with sort of trying to fight it that way.

"But we won't know until we know when it's going to actually happen, because we don't know. We've not been told."

In a statement, a Home Office spokesman said: "We are closing every asylum hotel and moving asylum seekers into basic accommodation including ex-military sites.

"This is an important step in ending the perception you can arrive illegally and be put up in a hotel.

"The population of asylum seekers in hotels has fallen by 35 per cent in the last year and by 63 per cent from the peak under the previous government.

"Overall asylum costs have already fallen by nearly £1billion since this government was elected."
