Video posted online showed a flume of smoke billowing into the sky from a ball of fire on the span over the East River as fireworks burst around it. The fire was extinguished shortly thereafter, a Daily Mail reporter noted. A spokesperson for the New York Police Department told The New York Times the fire was 'very likely' caused by the fireworks extravaganza.
