Pakistan's 'Screen Locked' wins Award of Merit in US

A Pakistani short film, Screen Locked, has received international recognition after winning an Award of Merit at the Best Shorts Competition 2026 in La Jolla. The 30-minute psychological techno-thriller, written and directed by Khalid Hasan Khan and co-produced with Alyy Khan, was honoured in the Contemporary Issues / Awareness Raising category. The film follows a psychiatrist, played by Alyy Khan, as he confronts the mental health impact of excessive screen use. Actor Atabik Mohsin also features in the film, portraying the widening disconnect between human relationships and digital dependence. Screen Locked explores the psychological toll of screen addiction, presenting a narrative that contrasts virtual immersion with the need for real-world human connection. Founded in 2011, the Best Shorts Competition is an international awards platform that recognises short films, documentaries and new media projects. Organisers say it operates as a merit-based competition, highlighting creative and technical excellence across global entries. Previous winners have gone on to receive major industry honours, including the Academy Awards and Emmy Awards. The film has been noted for its minimalist storytelling and its focus on a growing global concern around digital dependency and mental health. Filmmaker Khalid Hasan Khan has previously won multiple international awards for his work, which often centres on social issues. A graduate of the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, he has showcased his films at festivals across more than 20 countries.
